Gestational Diabetes!!!

Well ladies, i had an early one hour check because in my past pregnancies I've always been borderline and i frequently have sugar traces in my urine. About a week ago, i got a call saying that i had failed my test horribly with a glucose reading of 173. last saturday i went in to do my 3 hour glucose tolerance test, however, 45 minutes into the test i vomited all the glucola i had drank which meant they could no longer perform the test. This made me very angry because i had to fast in order to take the test, only to  vomit it back up. Ugh! Anyhow, today i got a call from the nurse midwife stating that they are going to "assume" me to have gestational diabetes. When i asked why, she simply stated that because of my strong family history of it, my recurrent high concentrations of sugar in my urine, and my high bg on my one hour glucose. Although it made sense, i was floored and completely devastated. She referred me to a diabetes nutritionist for nutritional counseling and told me i would get a glucometer and need to check my sugars four hours a day! That if the diet change didn't work I would need to take an oral medication. I am an LPN and fully understand the severity. This is a lifestyle change and although many times it goes away, what if it doesn't when i have the baby? Not to mention i absolutely hate having my finger pricked. I feel like everyone around me is dismissing it thinking things will be fine but i am scared. Especially because both paternal and maternal grandparents struggled with it. I've never watched what i ate and I'm not a "scheduled" person at all. Anyone have gd that can shed some light on the situation and prepare me for the road ahead?

I just was told I have it a couple of weeks ago! It's not fun to test and prick your finger 4x a day but it becomes somewhat tolerable. I just know that for my baby to be healthy and me to for that matter I just need to follow it with a good diet! It can be hard at times but possible to take care of it with diet alone! Good luck to you :)

Thanks for the helpful advice and tips. I've been ignoring the diabetes specialist phone calls. it's time to face the music.

Dang. I must have deleted the first part.

Run through...GD +, after the 3 hours test. Family history of type 2 diabetes. No prior issues for me though. Nutritional counseling is stupid. Following the diet my numbers were still borderline high...

Then continue with the one that posted first. :)

Watching what I was eating, my numbers were borderline still...so I'm on Glyburide 2.5 once per day. Now, I get to eat what I want and my numbers are borderline low.

The finger pricking is what I was most irritated by and it's still the biggest annoyance...but it isn't so bad. The Bayer microlancets are silicon coated and don't seem to hurt as much.
