It really is my oldest is bilingual I even taught her to read Spanish myself but she hates using Spanish and gets tired of people wanting her to translate. But as I told her it's up to her if she uses it but at least she knows it and can speak with family that don't speak English. I'm hoping to be able to start teaching my youngest soon.

Thank you. :) it's been difficult and still is extremely difficult for me to be accepted into their family because I am not Spanish, but I am doing everything I can to help the process. I have a new found appreciation for biracial couples, I had no idea that would be such a hurdle. So congratulations and God bless your family! :)

My husband and his siblings grew up with only Spanish in the home, and 5 out of the 6 all speak English like it is their first language. The same with my exhusband. Most children adjust quite well.

My man laughs at me too when I'm learning new words. It was discouraging at first, I agree. But I think he just thinks it's cute when I think I'm pronouncing something right, come to find out I'm looking ridiculous lol. It's a learning experience, and I think he appreciates my effort. So keep your head up girl, I'm sure the languages will flow with your children. They pick up quick. :)

My man is Mexican and I am white. He speaks Spanish with all his family and he has kids from a prior relationship and they all speak Spanish too. But also English. I bought Rosetta Stone when we got serious many months before we got pregnant. I'm not nearly fluent but can speak it. I really wanted to learn so I could interact with his family better and show my appreciation for our mixed cultures. We will be raising our baby bilingual also. It's an invaluable gift that you can bless your child with if you ask me. :) good luck!

Im still learning spanish. My son knows and understands more than me bt i think its because hes younger so it will stick to him more and he speaks it as well. I do too bt not as much cuz i feel like i sound like a white girl tryna speak Spanish. My husband sometimes laughs at me wen i speak Spanish so that also discourages me. .

My boyfriend is white and I'm Cuban I speak Spanish and English he loves the fact I know both and wants the baby to learn Spanish he has started to learn Spanish so the baby first language can be Spanish. But I of course ask him how he felt about it when we found out we were pregnant and had him make the decision. His family not to happy about it but he explain to them that's it's a good thing to know two languages now a days. Plus we live in a tourist around (Orlando,fl) so we get different types of people a lot of Spanish speaking people at that.

My husband is Mexican and we take extra care to make sure kids 1st language is English, if not it can make school and all hardfor tthem. I would say just keep speaking to baby in English and pointing things out and repeating the names in English. Try to limit how much everyone else speaks to him if they can't speak English. And let them know you want your baby to learn English first. Learning both at same time can cause a lot of confusion and delay in speech. My in laws don't speak English and respect our wishes and have their kids translate for them with my youngest until she is fully able to speak English. Which we believe she is but just like my step son she has anxiety which result in selective mutism so we have to continue putting off teaching her Spanish.
