Actually, you're wrong, Betty and MamaMacMurtry. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the people who do the actual research and publish the actual studies and make recommendations for healthcare guidelines across their field) say that a full term pregnancy is between 39 weeks and 41 weeks.

Here's their official position on the change. "In the past, the period from 3 weeks before until 2 weeks after the estimated date of delivery was considered “term”, with the expectation that neonatal outcomes from deliveries in this interval were uniform and good. Increasingly, however, research has identified that neonatal outcomes, especially respiratory morbidity, vary depending on the timing of delivery even within this 5-week gestational age range. The frequency of adverse neonatal outcomes is lowest among uncomplicated pregnancies delivered between 39 0/7 weeks of gestation and 40 6/7 weeks of gestation. For this reason, quality improvement projects have focused, for example, on eliminating nonmedically indicated deliveries at less than 39 0/7 weeks of gestation."

From the New York Times: "The earlier the delivery occurred, they found, the greater the baby’s risk of developing respiratory problems, being admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, needing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or mechanical ventilation, developing a body-wide infection, experiencing low blood sugar or requiring prolonged hospitalization. Relative to delivery at 39 weeks, various risks of harm to the baby increased by as much as fourfold for delivery at 37 weeks and doubled for delivery at 38 weeks...In an interview, Dr. Spong also outlined the mother’s risks in delivering a baby early. Induced labor may not work and can be very long; the mother’s risks of infection and postpartum hemorrhage are greater, and hospitalization can be prolonged."

From TIME: "One very recent paper shows babies at 37 to 38 weeks are more likely than those born later to need time in the NICU, mechanical ventilation and IV fluids...women, and their doctors, can start to think that when you move from 36 weeks 7 days pregnant to 37 weeks 0 days pregnant, there is a magic switch that means your baby is ready. This is obviously not the case."

I'm all set with my research, but thanks.

GeekMom-37 weeks is full term. Babies born at 37 weeks are perfectly healthy 99.99% of the time. Please do your research before you jump down someone's throat. That being said-I dk have to agree that "because I don't want to" is kindofban immature reason not to want to carry your child until he or she is ready to be born. On the plus side-you don't really have a choice. Your baby will come when he or she is ready & unless you have medical complications or are high risk, your doctor won't induce before 39-40 weeks. This is part of becoming a mother. Its awkward and uncomfortable & we knew that coming in, but we chose to have our babies anyway. You made your bed, honey, as uncomfortable as it may be-you've got to lie in it.

Yea that is a awful reason for all you know they are off a WK or two on your due date And your kid will be born with major issues. If your doctor agrees to KT then they shouldn't be a doctor. Mine as well gets used to being "inconvenienced" now BC being a.mom there's.a lot you'll want to do and won't be Able to anymore. Curious how old are you like 17 or 18?

I agree with GeekMom.. You need to let the baby fully develop on his or her own. You have less than 2 months left. Try focusing on the end result rather then the wait. "Because I don't want to" isn't a valid excuse. There is a reason why the normal delivery time for a baby is usually two weeks before or two weeks after the due date. Unless the baby is in a bad health condition, most doctors won't induce at 37 weeks. If you do find a doctor that will voluntarily induce your child that early, I suggest you find a new one because that doctor is horrible.

Sure, that's a great reason to give birth to a premature baby! Because you don't want to carry full term?!? I guess you really want to spend some time in NICU huh? You want a sick baby with respiratory issues and a lifelong increased risk for infections? Good thing your convenience comes first before your baby's health. Wow.
My advice - get over it. You chose to carry the pregnancy - now it is your obligation to carry it responsibly.
