I have 2 turtles and now I'm worried it is bad for my health. . I'm 20 weeks and HR.. but feal bad if I have to give them away (have them for over 2 years now).. what should I do?

I have 2 turtles as well. I read that as long as u wear gloves when cleaning em and u wash ur hands right after, it should be fine.

Evie55 is right. You also should remember that you need to thoroughly wash your hands
when you're done. Turtles and other scaly creatures alike carry e-coli and salmonella so be very careful. They are extremely harmful to you and baby. My cousin miscarried 3 times when she owned an iguana. Safety first.

Just wash like the other girls said and keep your new bundle away from then till he or she is about three or four your pediatrician will have the exact year. Lil ones are more sesptable to both salmonella and ecoli.

Thanks girls... I got worried about the salmonella that they can cause. ..and another things is I can't manage to keep the water clean long enough for it to not produce a bad smell.. don't know what to do..

Do you have a good filter in the water?? Also are you feeding them too much and is most of it hanging around in the water? I teach about the care of exotics and our little chicka (yellow bellied slider) has a good sized pool and she is about the size of a dinner plate but is only fed a 1/4 egg cup of pellets a day. We also scoop any crud out of her pool before feeding and this seems to help the filter not get all stuck and her water only needs cleaning once a month.

As long as you don't lick the turtles you'll be fine, wash after cleaning or holding and you and baby will be alright.

I have a slider and no longer feed him in his tank, I plug the kitchen sink, fill it with 1/2 inch of water, and treat it so that he can eat and poop there. I also wash my hands and surfaces after. I did have to completely empty and clean his tank after realizing this was causing most of my problems, and I sanitized everything during and after. I do have a filter, but since then his water has been crystal clear.

If you do completely clean the tank, I used a vinegar/water mixture successfully to remove the hard water and gunk. Yes, my nesting and cleaning urges have extended even to my pets :)
