NT Results Not So Great

Went for my third prenatal appointment today and we got the results of our NT scan. Based on the NT measurement, we are in the high risk category.

So, I have to go see a genetic counselor next week and then I'll be having an amnio within the next two to three weeks.

Not the best news, but, am really trying not to worry at this point. The dr. said she has seen babies with our measurement come out completely healthy and others that don't. The only sure way to know is the amnio.

She said the decision to have the amnio is completely up to us, but, I'm a planner and I would need to know beforehand so we could prepare.

Please keep us in our prayers.

Afferny, I know it's going to be a difficult wait for you over the next couple weeks.  Please try to be strong and think about Pookie's results.  Her NT measurements were very scary.  I was so very worried for her.  I also go next week for the NT scan on my twins and I'm a little nervous.  My prayers are with you  (with us both.)   Regardless, in the end, we will be so very blessed with these babies,  however God intended for them to be....

Just one more day of waiting. Tomorrow we get the two week culture results!  Am still assuming and hoping that we get good news and hope to not be disappointed.  Since the preliminary results were "normal", I just hope and pray that the two week culture results are the same.  I really feel positive about it, and hope not to be let down!

Will let you know tomorrow!!!!!!

aferny77 - are you still planning on having the amnio?  when is it scheduled for?

afferny- when I got my NT tests back last time the dr. came back and said how sorry he was, it was obvious that the test was REALLY bad.  We went for further testing and we had no chance of a healthy baby (they told me not to even bother with an amnio) so the fact that he wants you to still do it is a really good sign.  And everyone is right, there is such a high rate of false positives and I am glad that you are not panicking too bad and have done the research.  I wish you the best!

Pookie- After a long, crazy two weeks I am so drained and it really lifted my spirits to hear your great news!  I wish you didn't have to go through all that, but if you have to look at a positive out of all you went through, you now know for certain you have a healthy babies!!!!  YAY!!

Thanks pookie! I just replied to your note. I am SO happy everything worked out for you...you must be so relieved to have some final answers after wondering for that long. Here's hoping I'll be able to post the same in the next couple of weeks. :)

Two weeks ago I went through the same thing.  I am pregnant with twins (you can see my post from two weeks ago) and got a bad NT results for both babies!!!!!  one neck measured 3.5mm and the other 4.1mm.   A week later she measured 3.25mm and 5.11mm!!!!!!!!    She gave us odds of 1:8 for Baby A and 1:22 for Baby B.

Many things can cause extra fluid around the next - chromosomal problems, organ problems, heart problems or NOTHING.

My doctor was pretty negative - She told us most likely they both had chromosomal problems and that depending on what it was, maybe the pregnancy would end on its own.  She even asked if we still wanted the ultrasound photos or if it would be too strange for us to take them (knowing our babies wouldn't live or were not healthy)!!!!!  We were devastated..... She suggested CVS to see what was wrong.

So we decided to get a second opinion before deciding to do anything invasive!

So we went to an excellent specialist, who is also head doctor of a university clinic, this past Wednesday.    HE was VERY VERY thorough.  He said both babies look very good good - and checked their hearts, organs, extremeties - alll fine.  He said that with chromosomal problems usually there is something else wrong too.   He gave us odds of 1:50 for both babies.  Not great, but much much much better than the odds we had received from my normal doctors ultrasound.

We decided there that although he gave us much better odds and we felt much more at ease after that appt, we still decided there to do the CVS with him because I needed to regain that peace of mind and KNEW he was the right one to do the testing.

Today we got the preliminary fast test results - no chromosomal abnormalities!!!!!

The final results come first in 10 days, but 98.5% of the time they match the fast test results.  Now I can enjoy being pregnant again!!!!!!!

From what my MD told me, about 5% of positives are false. That rate increases, however, with your age. Meaning that, if you are older, the rate of false positives is higher. Please don't lose hope. Let us know how your amnio goes! Mine is scheduled for Monday, but I haven't completely decided if I'm going to do it. My NT test came back okay...1:490 for Down Syndrome. So I'm not sure if I want to do the amnio. I guess I'll decide on Monday.

Anyway, again...good luck and please let us know what happens!

I think these tests cause needless worry.  I think you will be fine.     Your research is right...more often results are fine.   This happened to a friend and she had amnio and everything was just fine.  The testing just caused her to stress out for a few weeks.

Thanks ladies. I'm trying to keep positive over here.

Tabby - the NT fold at the back of the baby's neck is supposed to be within a certain range for the crown to rump length of the baby. Based on our NT measurement and the CRL of the baby at the time the test was done, we are outside the normal range which makes us high risk for chromosomal abnormalities.

That being said, everything I have been reading states that for 1000 babies tested, 20 to 40 come back screen positive (which we did). Of those 20 to 40 babies that come back screen positive, only 1 baby actually has an abnormality.

So - the odds are overwhelmingly in our favour. :) But, the waiting until I have the amnio and get the results is gonna damn near kill me. :P
