Made a decesion about the NT test...

So, after much consideration we have decided not to have the NT test done this time.  Last time we did the NT test and decided that even if we were "high risk" unless we had definite proof that something was major wrong on the u/s that we wouldn't abort anyway.  I was thankful in a way that we were able to see that there was something wrong for sure so we never had to even make a decesion that we weren't 100% sure of.

So I called my Dr.s office today and they are going to do another u/s at 14 weeks with all the dr.s in the office and really look for any abnormalities (it was obvious by 14 weeks last time) and they are going to do another one at 18 weeks where they really scrutinize the u/s.  I think I am more comfortable with this, then going through the NT test and not having a clear answer.

I think the test is great for many women, but after going through what we did last time, we really learned alot and decided it was not for us during this pregnancy.  Hope all you ladies are doing well :)

i am wondering how you feel getting this particular test will improve the baby's quality of life?
i see the reasons for getting it, and the reasons for not. i am just not understanding the reason you are giving. most people who decide to get it do it to be able to prepare themselves emotionally if there is a problem.

I will most definitely have the test done. I too am an educated person, thank you. Also, I agree that every individual has a right to his/her own decisions. I also believe in giving every child the chance to have the best quality of life that is possible. JMO Good Luck either way! :)

tired but happy- I am def. doing the blood work...thankyou:)

JAXX- have you been throught the NT test?  I did, and after having to go through it last time we really realized that we weren't going to abort if we were high risk, only if there was something we could see on an u/s.  I guess the difference is you must me thinking you will abort if you are high risk?  If a person does not have any intentions of aborting, there is no reason for the test.  I guess it depends on what type of person you are, and I am an educated women and have done more research on the testing than most people would ever have to.  I feel that each person has a right to their own choices and I support them with what they choose, especially since it depends on which dr. you see if they even recommend it.  My dr. does not.  I feel that if dr.s who spent 8 years in college, then 4 years after working toward being able to practice all have varied opinions on the matter, then it only stands to reason that as a patient and as an individual that we would all have our own ideas of what is right for us!

i don't know if you read my other posts about this- just make sure you get the afp test- it's a simple blood test that detects neurotube defects like spina bifida. i had difficulty deciding what to do when i was pregnant the first time and opted to not get the NT test. however, a wonderful woman on the maternal and child forum helped me understand how important the afp test was since her child had spina bifida. if spina bifida is known about in advance, they can plan a c-sec and prevent significant damage to the baby.
