Anyone thinking about a registry or baby shower yet?

I'm wondering how many people have started their registry or if not, when you plan to start one. We have opened one a few weeks ago at Babys R Us and have about 4 things on there for now. This is our first so I honestly have no idea what to include! The store gave us a list of "must haves" but I hear its a store marketing scam to make you think you need more stuff than you really do. Like who REALLY uses a microwave sterilizer or wipe warmer? Also, my family is talking about doing a baby shower towards the end of the year. Since I am technically due in January I was thinking maybe we should have it in November. I'd hate to have it in December when i'm sure people have enough going on and expenses for the holidays. Has anyone else thought about these things?

Hi all

I won't be having a baby shower or a registry because this is my third baby.  I think it is tacky to have a baby shower for each pregnancy lol.

With my first I had tons of stuff I never used.  I loved having a microwave bottle steriliser, I also got one of those things that heat up bottles but very rarely used it because it was easier to put boiling water in a jug.

Cloth nappies were a must for me lol because my son had severe reflux.  After my daughter I decided to give them away thinking we weren't having another so now I have to get more :(

I found a breat pump very helpful and I also have a baby monitor that has a pad under it which allows an alarm to go off if baby stops breathing or moving.  I think that was one of my best buys!!!!!

I hope that helps

I just sent you my long list in a message. Hope you can make sense of it. You'll see notes about specific brands or why something worked better or what was a better bargain. Oh, and I've had FIVE people tell me just this week that you must bet the Baby Bargain book. Someone actually gave it to me as a gift on Monday so I had a great tool before I even knew I needed it.  Of course I am still trying to make sense if it all but hear it's a must have when buying items. Honestly, we are hoping to get just about everything at my showers and not have to buy much, of anything, out of pocket. But I'm still reading and checking things out to make sure I'm prepared when we do have to make a purchase.

Do share what were the good and bad?  I asked a few people and everyone was different and one even said that most everything is a complete waste that you don't need anything. Such mixed reviews but I'd love to hear what your friends said especially since they all agreed :)

We started our registry this weekend because we have an out of town shower the first week of November and invites are being printed and going out this next week. So I needed to get something started. I emailed 4 friends who all have babies less than a year old and asked two things-- what is an absolute must and what did you think you need that was a complete waste. Obviously every baby has different likes, but surprisingly, all four sent me back almost identical lists with specific products that were recommended to them that worked perfectly.  They also sent me the same list of what was a complete waste and i was grateful for that, too. So I combined all of the lists by category (I'm compulsive that way, HA!) and we had a great start for the registry. Of course we won't know if it's a boy or a girl yet so we started with all of the big stuff that was non-gender specific just get it going.

I did look over the registry list the store gave us but relied more heavily on the combined list of 4 friends/mothers and that was the biggest help.

If you feel like too much stuff will be everywhere you can look for highchairs that go on a regular table chair and they even have bathtubs that are collapseable for storage between uses. We are in a home but single family no basement, three bedroom but the two regular bedrooms (not master bedrooms) are small and I feel like we are going to be bursting at the seams from all the stuff that comes with a baby. Is it ok if their only toys are the three dogs? ;)  are you planning on doing to cribs at the beginning? I've heard twins sleep better together when they are really little so you can get away with one crib for several months especially when they can't even roll over on their own.

OH a must have I've been told is the miracle blanket or swaddler the blanket that makes swaddling baby easy. I know how to swaddle without the blanket but I hear in the middle of the night when you are half asleep or baby is screaming and wiggling it's awesome bc so simple.

I'm still tempted to get the diaper genie too bc if my house smells like poop I'm not going to be very happy and i know the dogs will try and find away to eat diapers... :P. And for us baby gates will be great to keep dogs and baby separate. :)

Good point on the cold wipes!! I wouldnt want that on me either. I guess we can try it out and see what they like and dislike. If there are things that dont get used, well I guess it's better to have too much than not enough!

As for the poopie diapers I definitely plan to buy a diaper genie if not two. I'd hate for my house to start smelling like a poopie diaper although i'm sure it will happen anyways haha. Good idea on the high chair! Thinking about all of the stuff we need makes me nervous. Where are we going to put everything!!!!?????

Started the registry but also haven't put much on it...  I hear different things from people from you don't need much of anything on the lists while others say they used pretty much everything. So I think it's a personal preference. You can always start with essentials and then add things as the essentials get bought adding things like a wipe warmer.

I've heard some people just sterilize everything by running it through the dishwasher while others like the quick fix of the micro. Some say don't use a bottle warmer bc if you are out and about and need to feed a bottle it won't be warm and they need to be able to tske it while others swear by a bottle warmer. I think it's hard for us with our first bc we don't know our preferences. Good advice I did hear was to look carefully at things like highchairs and think will this be easy to clean?  Same thing with cloth you want to know is this machine washable bc babies pee poop and barf with no warning....

Also diaper genie you can't use regular garbage bags with you have to buy the refill dispenser which is expensive so it might be more cost effective to buy a garbage can with a good lid the dogs can't get into. That way you can buy garbage bags at sams club and not spend a fortune.

Ive been checking consumer reports for safety ratings on car seats and stuff.

Alright I think thats it sorry for the long ramble!

I'm not having a baby shower since it's my third but I agree with you having yours in November
