Early Pregnancy and Low Thyroid

Hi Everyone,
My wife is pregnancy by 7 weeks 6 days. We went for a scan and blood test and found that everything with the baby is so far good and my wife has low Thyroid. And the doctor's reaction freaked me out. She said with this low Thyroid, baby's brain will be under developed.

Her test results:
Free T4 - 0.63 ng/dL
TSH -      15.67 micro IU/mL

Is this statement true? We are very much worried about this. My wife already had low thyroid and she was taking Thyronorm tablets and stopped 5 months back. The doctor asked us to continue with that. she suggested one 100mg per day. She did not tell us whether taking this tablet will bring everything under control. LEt me know if we have to consult some other doctor related to thyroid.

The med should bring it under control and is safe in pregnancy. In a few weeks her thyroid should be rechecked to see if dosage needs to be adjusted. My mother had undiagnosed low thyroid when pregnant with me and I am currently finishing up my phd at the age of 26. Im in the national scholars honors society, have an above average IQ and even graduated high school early and college and my masters degree program with honors  Intelligence has a lot to do with genetics so don't worry too much about this. It was caught early :)

My mom had undiagnosed low thyroid with her first pregnancy, which caused her to lose the baby at seven months. The good news is she found a new doctor(my Ob now) when she got pregnant with my sister and he put her on thyroid replacement. She went on to have three perfectly healthy pregnancies and children. I am sorry your doctor was so insensitive to you, she should not have jumped to such a horrible conclusion. My siblings and I are all above average in IQ testing if that makes you feel any better. Hope this helps.

I myself have hypothyroidism. I take 175mcg of synthroid every morning. I have two healthy boys and both amazingly smart (not smart like a mom bragging smart but truly super smart). I am currently pregnant again and am hoping for a healthy pregnancy. My doc just said to remain on the meds to keep my body regulated and everything else is up to mother nature. If your wife is taking her medicine for this and gets it under control..maybe long term effects can be avoided. I would keep my hopes up until I found something to worry about. My prayers are with you and I hope the best for your family!
