Abnormal Mass in Gestational Sac at 7w3d
Today was my first prenatal visit and sonogram. Its our very first baby and we are beyond excited. I've been waiting for today to come so we can see our little pumpkin and hear the heartbeat. I'm 7 weeks, 3 days along and the baby looks fabulous, heart just beating away. BUT, a big fat BUT, there is some sort of mass inside the gestational sac that the dr is very concerned about. She doesn't know what it is and is sending me to a specialist as soon as they can get me in. I have to stop working out and having intercourse and pretty much be as inactive as possible aside from going to work. She said its not something they see often therefore she didn't want to tell me too much. She said it could be a cyst or a blood clot that could absorb into the placenta or it could be a fibriod which will be harmful to my baby in that it would compete with the space inside and cause me to miscarry. I have pics but I don't have a clue how to post them. Has anyone else had a problem like this???? Today was supposed to be an amazing day but it just left me scared and worried.

I'm so sorry your special day has been tainted w/ this unknown issue. Is it possible it's twins? I pray it's nothing serious and it sorts itself out soon.
I have the exact same thing!! I have a twin pregnancy (my first pregnancy as well) but one sac has a mass exactly like you described, I am 7w0d. Baby's heart and growth are perfect, but I am also going to see a specialist to check out what this could be. My endocrinologist has never seen anything like this. From what I have found online (not much) it's rare and sometimes resolves on its own, sometimes may cause a miscarriage. I am beyond worried about this but trying to stay positive. Good luck with yours, I hope it works out positively for both of us!!

I am in the same boat as you two!! I had my first sono on Tuesday, I am 7 wks 5 days and my sono showed an abnormal mass in my gestational sac. Baby was there, normal growth size, and had a heartbeat. I went back on Thursday for another sono and my doctor was still unsure of what was going on. I am seeing a specialist this coming Wednesday. My heart goes out to both of you, this is a very nerve wracking time and it's scary not knowing what is going to happen to you and your baby. I am also trying to stay positive and do realize that I cannot control what is going on in my uterus and whatever is mention to be, will be. I hope to hear from both of you in the near future, as strange as it sounds, it's nice to know that I'm not the only one, and wish both of you and your future babies nothing but the best.

I just had a sonogram and there was a mass in my gestational sac, but there was a heartbeat as well...6w5d along.

I have the same thing. I went in for an ultra sound at 7 weeks 5 days. And they found this mass of i dont know what, next to the baby but not attached to it, wiithin the sac.
I have an appointment with a specialist on the 28th of this month. If anyone has already found out what it is, please let me know asap. I really am worried...

Wow it seems like this mass thing is happening to quiet a lot of people. I've never heard of it but I do wish all of you the best and will keep you in my prayers for your little ones and yourselves to come out healthy
It is supposed to be really rare. The doctor said she has never seen anything like it before?!! Hearing that.. anyone can guess what I'm going through right now. I'm heartbroken. I've heard of "molar pregnancy" where the sperm fertilizes either an egg with no nuclues, or two sperms fertilize two eggs. I'm not really sure how it happens but it causes a mass in the uterus. and it does need to be removed because apparantly it can spread to your lungs (kind of like cancer). But, with a molar pregnancy there should be no baby in the sac. just the mass. So, that being said, it can also happen with a twin pregnancy.
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong before the appointment but apparantly thats not working and i got myself even more freaked out.
I will let you all know what happened at the appointment!

I hope all goes well for you two and that the next few days fly by. It can seem like an eternity when you have to wait to see what is going on. I went to a specialist September 23rd and she said that I have a placental cyst. It doesn't happen very often, but I was one of the three pregnancies that day that had one! She didn't seem too concerned about it and is monitoring it on a bi-weekly basis. I went back on the 9th and the cyst hadn't gotten any bigger and appeared to be filling in. She said that is a good thing because that is typically what happens when it goes away. I go back yet again today for another follow up.
Please keep me posted and I hope you both have positive outcomes. And stay off the internet researching, too!! I did that for about a week before my appointment with the specialist and about drove myself crazy!

Just giving you all an update on what happened on my appointment. The specialist/doctor still could not tell what that mass was.. But she told me not to drive myself crazy over it. That this was a problem with doing early ultrasounds when everything is too small or too hazy to identify. She said it would most likely go away 12th-14th week. The most important thing was that the baby was fine, I got a healthy fetal pole with a heartbeat and the thing is no where near the baby.
They also said i had 3 cysts on my left ovary, size of a lemon each!!!! They were surprised i have no pain. They said these are also common due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and they may go away, but she will check on them later.
I still don't really know what to feel about all of it. nothing was changed but atleast i have a bit more peace..

I am now 26 weeks pregnant. I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks and I found out that I am having a baby girl =)
Even more... the mass was gone!
Try to relax and not worry because its not good for you or your baby. You most likely are worrying over nothing. Sometimes doctors arent able to detect a heartbeat at 7 weeks. There is nothing you can do but relax and wait it out, which i know is very hard in this situation. But I've been there. I didnt have faith. But my baby proved me wrong. She strong and kicking everyday.
I hope everthing works out for you.

Anyone else want to comment on how their pregnancies turned out. I'm 8 weeks by LMP and went for an U/S today due to cramping. they found a large mass in the gestational sac. the doc came in and said he was stumped, never seen anything like it. Recommended follow up in one to two weeks. The mass was definitely large and noticeable, so much so that they almost missed the fetus (which is measuring only 6 weeks but, does have a heart beat).
Of course, I'm freaking out and just want to know answers. It's so hard knowing that something may be wrong but, you can't know for sure.

I was found to have an unidentified mass in my gestational sac at 5w6d, and it was still there when I had a scan a week later, and then another week or so later at 7w4d (for the second and third scan, there was normal fetal heartbeat).
The mass is white in colour on the US (rather than black, which usually indicates a subchorionic hematoma, I'm told). It is kind of spherical, I think.
At my last scan, the sonographer said she suspected a partial mole, though the doctors (even the specialists) said they couldn't be sure. Surely if it's a partial mole you wouldn't see the mass in the GS as early as 6 weeks? (All I've read about partial moles is that they are usually detected only after miscarriage or D&C following fetal demise, but that very early scans show heartbeat and all appears normal - i.e. no mass?)
If anyone could tell me what your mass looked like and what happened, I'd be really grateful.

I dont remember what mine looked like. All I know is that it was as big as fingertip. As my pregnancy went on, it disappeared completely. My baby is now 3 mons old and she is perfectly fine.
I know what you are going through. stop looking up stuff and just let it be. You wont be able to figure out what will happen in the future by doing so. I know how difficult that is to do. I have been there. But all you can do is wait and see. Your baby is still ok so thats good news.

I am now the proud mama of 4 month old Nathan! My mass turned out to be a placental cyst which eventually disappeared, I believe in November or December. Nathan is such a happy and healthy little guy and is doing great.
It was definitely a stressful first half of my pregnancy, but on the brightside, I had 10 sonos and got to see his progression in the womb on a regular basis.

Same thing here! Glad to hear some of the pregnancies turned out just fine. Makes me feel better. I'm very early along with twins. One sac is perfectly fine (too early to detect embryo or heartbeat) 2nd sac has mass (with embryo that has a heartbeat). Looks like I ovulated twice from the same egg, so the 2 eggs were fertilized a few days apart. (Reason for the 2 different heartbeat detections). I have had days and days (close to 1 week) of very light brown spotting. Doctors say it's nothing to worry about unless pink or red. I figure it could be implantation bleeding from the first then second implantation. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
I had my first ultrasound (for my first pregnancy!!!) on February 1st, I was 6 weeks 1 day LMP. We saw and heard the heartbeat, best thing ever! Embryo looked great. HOWEVER There was a large (larger than the embryo), noticable mass in the gestational sac, the nurse and doctor were unsure of what it was. My HCG levels were slightly heightened but not severely, I had no cramping, bleeding or super severe nausea. Several possibilities were discussed with me ranging on the less scary end from a blood clot, a cyst, a twin that would be resorbed; to a few scarier possibilities like a partial molar pregnancy to tropoblastic disease....they were hoping to rule out the scarier ones since I didn't have some of the symptoms common with them.
I was sent two weeks later (to let everything grow a bit, but still a long wait) to a high risk specialist for an ultrasound, hoping that since they see more unusual cases and might know what it is. That was February 13th.
The doc was still unsure of what it was, thought possibly a placental cyst or on the scarier end, an acardiac twin (which would draw blood and vital nutrients away from the growing embryo and not allow it to survive). They were still unable to tell 100% if it was attached to the embryo but they didn't think it was.
She was mostly able to rule out a partial mole or a twin that would be resorbed because there was no second embryonic sac and I still don't have the symptoms that go along with it.
Sooooo.....I go back again to see her in two weeks to check it out again, and make sure it hasn't changed. Then I will go back two weeks after that for my first trimester screening.
From my very first appointment, when I asked the doctor on a scale of 1 to 10, how worried I should be (i was at a 20), he told me I should be a 4 because thats where he was at. After my second appointment, I asked again and he told me I should only be at a 2 or a 1....I was relieved to get detailed info even though they still were unsure what it was. One tip I will give, DONT go to Google and try to learn about all of the possibilities, you will just scare your self and find information that may not be accurate which will scare the pants off of you.
My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any sort of scare or worry in a pregnancy, it is so difficult not to worry every day while still being so excited about the possibility of bringing a baby into the world. We are cautiously optimistic and will continue along that path while maintaining a healthy level of worry.

After that I had check up in March 2012 to make sure everything is fine before having another pregnancy and everything is fine except the Dr found unidentified mass in my gestational sac. He suspected that is an echogenic mass (suspected endometrium polyp) with 7mm diameter in the upper uterine cavity. He said that because I had a succesful first pregancy, I should not be very worried about that but the risk are I will be having difficulty to get pregnant and it will increase the misscarriage possibility. Suprisingly, one month after that check, I got pregant and based on my first US, the mass is still there close to the gestational sac. The dr (different doctor with the first one) is not able to confirm what is it and suggested me to have another US in 2 weeks. Same with others, to knowing someting is happening in your body and you could not do anything is very frustated. I am trying to keep positive thinking and pray for the best in next US. However, after lost my second baby, I and my husband still feel nervous about what is happening. Hope everything will be ended happily like your experiences.

Hello, So Sorry this is happening. But I have to say that I am a tiny bit relieved to see that someone else shares my issue. This is almost my story to a T. Only this is going to be my 3rd child, and I haven't been pregnant in 10 years. I just had my first ultrasound yesterday, and they said the same thing! I am being sent to a high risk specialist ASAP. Hey Marcella, I like you am on my third baby. Just went in for my first ultra sound and baby has strong heartbeat measuring 7w5d but there is a mass on the other side of the sac. My doc thinks it's a vanishing twin, but I go see a specialist on Thursday. Please keep me updated on your situation. I will keep you updated on mine.
