Sleeping patterns going backwards? WHAT?!?!

OK - so Cash is 10 weeks old today and for the last three weeks (i think that's right) he has been sleeping 5 to 6 hours at night, eating, going back to sleep, and then waking up after 3 more hours, eating, and going back to sleep.
Well, the last two nights he is waking up after 4 hours, eating, sleeping 3 hours, eating, then sleeping.

What would cause him to be reverting back to that pattern?  Especially when he should be getting closer and closer to all night sleeping.

Just for background info - he eats 4 and half ounces every three hours during the day.  His last bottle before bed has a tsp of cereal for every ounce of milk bc the doctor recommended it to thicken the formula bc he has reflux really bad when he lays down.  I'm thinking - babies without cereal sleep through the night at this age, shouldn't he be feeling more satisfied and be sleeping longer. Oh, and he has been having cereal since he was 3 weeks old so its nothing new, so I don't think that has anything to do with it.

I'm so baffled!

Layla is doing the same thing. It was only for a week though that she went to sleep at 10 and woke up at 5am and then would eat and sleep again till 9am...I thought I was finally set, but apparently not. Now she sleeps from 10 till 3 and eats, then sleeps till 7 and eats, and then maybe she'll sleep for a couple of more hours before she was to wake up and play. Its still ALOT better than the newborn schedule, but I was SO thanking God for the 10-5 schedule and then He snatched it right back, lol. I give her rice in her bottle too, but I give her a tblsp in 5 oz. I started doing it when her dr recommended it bc she was eating too much too often and that did seem to help regulate a schedule and thats when she finally started sleeping better at night...but every night when dh and i go to sleep i say...tonight is the night that she will sleep until 8 am, lol. One day I will get my wish.

Evan is doing the same thing at 9 weeks. Only sleeping for an hour or two at night and then being so exhausted during the day that he sleeps constantly.

Jack did that at 9 weeks -- then all of a sudden this week he started sleeping through the night (monday and tuesday nights so far). Anyhow, I remember being mad when he woke up through the night last week because I, like you, was like "isn't he supposed to be getting closer to sleeping all night vs. reverting back???" !!

Jack didn't have such a great night last night, but I think it's because we stayed up late. He went down at 11 pm, woke up at 2 am, ate 2 oz, back to sleep, woke up at 4 am and a pacifier put him back to sleep until 9:30 am. He ate 4 oz and then went back to sleep until 12:30 pm. But, DH is working on a big case and was up until 4 am working downstairs on the computer, and I stayed up late ... and had the TV on (mute, but on) until DH got up to bed. The other two nights that he slept through the night we went to bed by 11:30 pm. So, maybe it's his surroundings? Who knows. Babies are unpredictable to say the least!

Well, I hate to say this, but I'm glad I'm not alone with a LO that can't decide how long he wants to sleep at a time :-)    I guess we just have to figure them out as we go.   I keep waiting for at least one question that I have to have a one size fits all answer, but it seems like everything keeps going back to "every baby is different". LOL!

Oh, and FirstCub Cash will not sleep with a TV on - even on mute, bc he is fascinated by the shadows that it throws on the walls of a darkened room, so needless to say I'm thankful for DVR - so that I can catch up on all of my favorite TV programs on the weekends!

GRose - You are just proof positive that all babes are different bc this is your second and your LO is giving you a run for your money at night!  I hope he reverses his nights and days to the appropriate order for you very soon!!  Cash went through that earlier and I fealt like a walking zombie!!  Luckily he worked it out before I had to come back to work.

Karen!!  So glad to hear from you girl!  I hope little Layla keeps up the good work for you!

Well, last night Cash slept from 10 until 4, had a bottle and then slept til 7:15.  That's more like what he was doing before.  I guess its like FirstCub said - baby's are unpredictable! :-)
