Last names

So I'm expecting my first baby on July 31st and my boyfriend and I couldn't be happier. Originally, we had decided that our little girl would have my last name, and if it were a boy, it would have his. Well it turns out wee are having a beautiful little girl, but today he asked if she could have his last name. My mom and dad were married when I was born, but got divorced about a year later. I never had his last name and that has helped keep my mom and I close. My biggest problem with our little lily having his last name is that we aren't married. I feel we should have the same last name whether its mine or his. But I also realize that she has more of a tie to me because I'm the one carrying her. This is a huge decision. Any advice?

A friend told me that giving our child his last name would be one way to create a tie between baby and dad. The fact is, if we split she'll still come with me, and be mine. 95% of the time mom gets custody and having the same last name may help provide them some sort of connection. Besides, you have up to a year after he/she is born to change the name without paying. And if you do end up having to pay it's not that difficult or expensive to do

Wow I never looked at it that way.. I opened my eyes to something new!! Thanks! I'm having a boy due July 18th and he wanted our son to be a jr.. I told him no because we are not married.. But I was told by other mothers that giving the child your last name makes things Easier when the parents are no longer together
