hydronephrosis=horrible, unbearable kidney pain...

Sorry this is long... At 24 weeks I had a horrible, extreme, debilitating right sided mid back pain that sent me to the hospital. They (labor&delivery because I was too far along for the ER to "handle" me) told me baby was fine, I was dehydrated, and to follow up with my OB. I couldn't get to the OB for another 5 days and it stopped the morning before (because I had been in pain for a few days before the trip to the ER that made a total of 8 days of extreme, horrific pain).  My ob said it was probably a kidney stone and to stay hydrated.

Well at 27 weeks (this past friday) it came back full force while I was I driving, and I had to pull over and have some one come pick me up because I was crying too hard to drive. We went to a different hospital(same  company but their big downtown location instead of the smaller one on my side of town) because I was right down the road from it. They ordered an ultrasound and it showed my right kidney was swollen with extra fluid. They drugged me up and admitted me. Over the weekend they did two urine tests, a blood test, another ultrasound, a special low dose three shot x-ray w/contrast and I went through 5 different IV sites. (My IV sites kept going bad because they were giving me Demerol and phenergan which was burning my veins up, my arms are super sore!)

In the end they have determined that my babygirl was laying on my kidney or ureter and blocking drainage. The pain has lessened again as it did the first time indicating she's atleast temporarily moved off of it but it's not a real solution to the problem.

Now my questions.... Anyone else have this problem? I'm afraid its only going to occur again and again and get worse and worse as she gets bigger in there... And they are giving me Norco for pain relief at home but it doesn't touch the pain when its full force (the Demerol didn't even help it, it just put me to sleep). All these meds are being given to me by my OB and dr.'s in the Labor and Delivery area but I'm so worried about how they are affecting baby.

If you had this problem before did different sleeping positions or anything help keep baby from blocking it? Or any advice you have?

oh you poor thing! I've had to follow up with a urologist and am having to keep track of fluid in & out to but lucky haven't had to return to the hospital with unbearable pain again ( knock on wood, i'm at 31.5 weeks now and don't want it to come back) ... I notice some days I manage to urinate gallons(it seems) and I feel fine and then some days I don't urinate at all, sleep all through the night without getting up and then wake up with my kidney area sore. But I've been practicing stretching to get her to move, and trying to be conscious of how I sit and lay so she isn't pressed back into my kidney, I don't know if it really helps but in my head it does. Keeping my fingers crossed I can stay off the pain meds and avoid any further complications... Good luck to you on your next one and hope yoe've healed and are doing good otherwise! :)

Hi, I'm 31 weeks now and have a 19 month old, at 5 months with my last one I went from 0-1,0000000 in excruciating pain, my DH ran me to the hospital, they did blood and ursine and told me there was nothing wrong with me but morphine didn't help so they gave me dilaudid. It was 1 pm on a Sunday and was hesitant to call the MRI tech in on overtime, by 11 pm got my MRI and by the tine I got up to the ER the dr was sitting on my bed apologizing...my kidney had ruptured and I was admitted for 6 days. By Thursday they gave me a stent, from my kidney to my bladder. It was awful, I peed blood the whole rest of my pregnancy. It was surgery and I had it replaced 10 weeks later.  They tried to give me oral painmeds and send me home before the surgery, they were afraid I'd go into labor due to the surgery. I spent 4 months on pain meds sparingly, they reassured me that they don't hurt the baby. I was like I can take pain meds but no wine...lol my Ella is fine..thank G-D! I've been under the care of my urologist prior to this pregnancy. I'm really sorry you had to suffer. That's not supposed to happen it's not good for the baby. I hope all is well!
Hugs,
Melanie
