Breech - Aversion vs. C-Section???

So, we went to the doctor's today for our 37 week appt.  The baby is breech at this point.  Doc. was unsure, so he did an ultrasound to make sure, and he is breech.  So, we have 2 options...we can do aversion, so the doctor will try to flip the baby, which can be painful and the baby may flip back.  He could also get the umbilical cord pinched and then they have to flip him back.  Another risk of aversion is that the placenta could burst and then there would be an emergency C-section.  The 2nd option we have is to schedule a C-section and then right before, there will be an ultrasound to see if the baby is still breech.
Has anyone had an experience with this or any advice to share what you would do and why?  Thanks!

I ended up not having the aversion done because I heard it was painful, I didn't know if it was safe for the baby, and my husband's aunt is a nurse, and she said that a majority of the babies turn back.  My co-worker had it done, and it worked great for her!  Good luck!  Congrats on the baby!

I am having the exact same dilemma! My husband and I decided to try the Aversion and are having it done next Friday.  I am very nervous for the process because I heard it could be painful, but we figured we needed to try it. If the doctor puts you in the labor, then he/she puts you into labor and you have the c-section anyway :)

Well, I guess I differ with my thoughts!  Go figure :)  First, that s u c k s... I hate when babies have their own agendas!  hahaha...

If it were my husband and I in your exact position, I would try and do the aversion first.  Although there is some risk of the placenta abrupting, etc. the risk of a c-section is even more intense.  I think  a lot of people forget that a c-section is MAJOR surgery and you have the risk of bleeding to death, infection, not healing properly, excessive pain after surgery, etc.  So, for me... I would attempt aversion first.  Then, if it doens't work... no big deal, but at least the attempt was made.  Yes, it will be uncomfortable, but so is labor :)  No one said this baby business was easy!  Sheesh... :)

But, it is your decision and it is a big decision no less... and whatever that decision is I am sure that you will be happy with it :)

I wish I could help.... I have never had to have either or know of anyone that has had them.... I do think tho that some of the women in the pregnancy forum 18-34 have... might be a good idea to post there too if you havent already.....

I guess if I had a choice I would probably go with the Aversion... I guess the end result is most likely going to end in a C section so you can prepair your self for that... BUT what if you get lucky and the Aversion works and you able to have a normal vaginal birth! I think that now a days they are soo good with monitering and working with situations like that, that there is a low chance of any complications.... I say try the Aversion! You might get lucky! Good Luck!

My friend had the aversion done in Nov.  She ended up in labor and delivering vaginally 5 hours later!  With no problems!  And she said, that it's not painful, it's just uncomfortable from the doctor pushing the baby, more of pressure than anything.

So it's up to you!  You can always try the aversion, and have the c-section scheduled for the same day just in case, or you can do the c-section!

Good Luck with your decision

I would do the c-section too...there seem to be too many risks with the aversion and then the dr can't even guarantee that that would even work. So it might be dangerous AND unnecessary pain for you plus you would end up with a c-section anyways!

I know how you feel though about the c-section...I don't want one either but at the same time if I had as many potentials for something to go wrong I probably would just elect for the c-section and hope that the last minute ultra sound shows the baby in the right position...but if not be mentally prepared for a c-section.

This is my first baby however I think that I would go for the c-section because atleast you know what day you will have the baby....and on top of that you dont have to endure the pain and danger of the doctor turning the baby manually. Also taking the risk that the baby will turn around again...i know a c-section might not be and ideal thing but in this case may turn out for the best....good luck
