Discussing baby names with partner

I really want to call our son after my dear father who died suddenly 2 years ago. He had an uncommon but not unfamiliar French name. I know I will be really upset if my partner didn't consider it or want it as even a middle or second name. We haven't discussed names yet at all and I'm not sure how to approach it. My family all have distinctive names and his family all have ordinary (dull in my opinion!) names, including his two children from his previous marriage. Does anyone have any advice for how I should approach this delicate yet important discussion? And help swing it my way ;)

I have always wanted to name my baby after my grandpa that passed away and I told my mom I would then a friend of mine passed away so I decided if I had a boy I would name it Dylan James after my friend who passed and grandpa and my bf didn't have a problem with it I hope it works out for u.

I have the same issue...my father passed away when I was 14 and I always said I wanted to name my baby boy after him...well my husband is a Jr. And wants to name his son the 3rd...so we decided that if it's a boy he gets his name and if it's a girl I get to pick the name..don't worry it will all work out!
