How do you know if you start to dilate?

I was at a 3 and had no idea. I didnt start feeling pain until 5ish.

Nope nothing.  U can get to 3 or some times even 4 and not feel a thing. Once ur at 4 they will admit u into the hospital. Usually by 4 u will have true labour contractions. But ull truly only know when they check ur cervix

So you personally don't feel any symptoms or anything?

The doctor will let you know when he checks your cervix

U won't know .. the doc will perform a cervical exam and let u know. He will feel ur cervix.
