Midwife vs. OBGYN?

I am an anthropology student and I am working on a research paper on how midwifery is viewed versus OBGYNs. So if anyone here would like to give me their opinions and why they have them on the subject, I would appreciate it.

Does midwifery even play a significant role in modern society? Is it considered as a viable option? IS is a viable option? On the flip side, why are OBGYNs seemingly so much more reliable and available?

Thanks!

I went with a midwife because I sat down with an OBGYN and he flipped through my chart like an index card and sent me on my way after minutes.

With my midwife, I visit at the midwifery clinic which happens to be a gorgeous old converted house. My appointment doesn't have a Max length. Sometimes they are a quick 20 minutes, sometimes an hour. I have her work #, her home #, her cell, and her pager #. I can phone her personally whenever I need her.

I am doing a hospital birth. I know that when I go into labor she is coming to my house until it's time to be transferred. I know it'll be her instead of a random doctor. She will also come to my home everyday after delivery for a week to check on me and baby and help with any bumps in the road.

My experience with my midwife, joined with the fact of a hospital birth, is the perfect option for me. My family lives across the country and I really needed the extra support, especially with it being my first baby.

I like having both. I only lime the hospital because if issues do occur you have a quick emergency route. The reason I don't like the obgyn and hospital is because they are more for procedure than letting the woman birth as naturally as possible. I preferred to be in a comfortable position than on my back and I don't like being asked a million times if I want certain meds after I've already refused. I also like being able to have one or 2 doctors when it comes to delivery. I feel more comfortable knowing who will be delivering my baby. Most obgyn offices have 6 doctors and you never have time to get to know them so it's not really on a personal level it's based on charts.

I like midwives because they do take the time to get to know you. They understand the importance of comfort during pregnancy. I love the fact that the midwife I see will be the one to deliver and she knows me and my situation better than an obgyn I've never seen.

I like birth centers that are located in hospitals because you still get your midwife and if some emergency comes up you still have the hospital to take care of you.

One more reason I like midwives is because they seem to be more educated in natural birth and breastfeeding. I had a hard time after my son was born because the obgyn wasn't available to help with breastfeeding and the nurses were not very educated on breastfeeding and they also made me feel like my son had to have formula. Even after I told the No. Anyhow, I have my pros and cons for both.

Don't worry about sounding one sided! I really appreciate your thoughts! Do you think if there was a midwife working out of a hospital you would have felt more comfortable?

I Loved Having An Obgyn Because I Was In A Hospital Where I knew I Would Be Taken Care Of No Matter What. I Have Heard To Many Horror Stories As To Midwives Not Being Properly Equipped And Something Happening That They Were Not Able Top Save The Baby. To Many Things Can Go Wrong During Delivery And I Was Not WIlling To Take The Chances. Drs Go to School For Many Years Where As Some States Don't Even Require A Midwife To Have A license To Open Shop. If You Are Interested In A Very 1 Sided documentary Watch The Business Of Being Born. personally I Couldn't disagree More With What They Say Because I Had A Wonderful Experience In The Hospital With Drs And nurses. Where They Film It Is A Big City Which May Have A Different agenda . But They Are Out To Give All Drs AndHospitals A Bad Name. Not Sure If I Helped.... I May sound 1 Sided Also But I Guess its How I Feel.
