babies surname

So ive just had a debate with the bf about my babies last name. He is a sage and im a lloyd. I just think its weird how traditon dicates that the child takes dads last name when we are the ones who carry the baby for 9 months give birth then pick up pieces when the dad doesnt bother (not staying this applies to me just in general it happens a lot) am i wrong for saying this? Just confirming im not saying my partner will do this and he/she will have his last name but its not a right he should expect is it?

My first took my maiden name because I  did not marry her father. Now, my last three have my husband's last name because I took his name when we married.

I agree babyhamp15 in my opinion if the father is around there is no reason for the baby to not have there last name..  my daughter is definitely getting my fiances last name..  I do completely understand women giving there child there last name when he just ups and leaves or is no where in the picture.. I think it just depends on the situation..  it just makes me mad when women do it to be spitful but that's the only reason why I don't agree w it.

The point of giving the child the father's last new is to protect the child from perhaps sleeping with their brother/sister.

@got2luvmel... sorry about ur sis. That *****. Even if we didn't end up together or weren't together now, I'd still give my child his/her father's last name. To me it's the right thing to do. If my parents weren't married when I was conceived I'd hope my mother would do the same but each it's own.

Babyhamp15...my sister said the same thing. 5 years later and he never married her. He left her and my niece for another woman right after Christmas last year. Not saying your bf is a douche, mine certainly isn't, but I'll be dmned if I give my baby his last name just because he helped create her and is making promises now. Promises can be broken.

Why not give the baby both last names?

My baby is having my last name. I'm doing all the work and then some. Besides, my kids won't ever carry a last name that isn't mine.

I'm definitely giving my baby my bfs last name. We plan to get married in the future & i don't want to have to worry about changing it later.  Besides that, he would be heartbroken if I didn't & it's not a big deal to me that my child have my last name.

Same with me. I'm not with the father and he thinks it's his right to give my son his last name. Saying his first son should have his name. I gave in eventually because I don't like my last name anyways. But kinda wish I held my ground more.

I've been conflicted with this. Religion states baby has to have fathers name, mainly to protect the baby in the future from being denied that they are their child. Also on case the father has other children its supposed to protect them from incest.

I agree with you..my kids have their dads surname but it certainly shouldnt be expected that men automatically should think that thats the way it should be,not in this day and age
