My boyfriend and I found out I am 5 weeks pregnant last week! We are very excited but we both don't have very much money. How did you guys afford having a child!?

I am 20 and I dont have a lot of money either. I will be cloth diapering(it saves a lot of money in the long run and is good for the earth!),i have gotten a lot of hand me downs and i will be having a baby shower, if you dont have health insurance get on medicade everything should be free(like dr appts), also if you make ur own baby food which is really easy that will save TONS and its better for your baby, and try your best to breast feed because thats free food!

I'm in the same situation as you. I have no job I'm 20 weeks and money is hard right now. I'm saving up every penny for my baby and doing what I could. Where I live I'm getting help from this place and they give checks for certain things for you to be healthy during pregnancy like foods milk stuff like that and they help you till the baby is 5 years old. It's a life saver till I find a job to save more money but baby showers will help to by giving you things and helping out

Babies are cheaper than they seem. They're still expensive, but it's not that bad.
Save what you can, as you can. Apply for medicaid, food stamps, and cash benefits through your state's welfare department. Apply for WIC. If you meet the income requirements for programs you can receive medical care throughout your whole pregnancy with 100%coverage, and monthly allowances for food and spending money (the cash benefits ate harder to get). You will have to meet certain requirements throughout enrollment to stay qualified but it's worth it. WIC will also help with food for you and later on the baby. You can also go to your city hall or township buildings, local churches etc and see what they have to offer.
Having a baby shower not only gets you gifts, but it's also fun. Same for a diaper party. And buying little things here and there throughout the pregnancy helps stretch your budget. You also don't need everything in the suggested registry lists. When making larger purchases, do your homework. What will last the longest? A convertible crib will outlast a bassinet. What is necessary right away? What are the store return policies? Return policies are important because what if you buy a swing but baby hates it, you might want to return it for a bouncer chair(most babies prefer one to the other but it's a guessing game).
I was a FTM with no money either. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Second hand stores are amazing, and even if you're not super comfortable buying used baby furniture (safety guidelines change constantly), used baby clothes are the best. They're just going to get pooped, peed and thrown up on anyways. Good luck.

Buy what you need little by little throughout your pregnancy,  that way your not spending large amounts of money all at once.
Also shop at Walmart and second hand stores.  Check out Craigslist,  and thrift shops. Yard sales and stuff like that.
No need for expensive brands or brand name products,  plus a baby shower will help out a bit. Or even a diaper party or shower.
