Can you reschedule for a day you know he can go?

If he can't make the 20 week scan then get a private scan. You can find out the sex of the baby at 16 weeks plus the experience is more better in the private scan.
He won't want to miss this opportunity,  it is a great bonding experience with your first baby

My ultrasound tech got a picture of the gender and you can always turn away as they do it and they can put that one picture in an envelope and pull it  out when you partner gets home. On the bottome of mine the tech had typed "i'm a BOY!" Its nice

Get a friend to go with you. Have the tech pull her outside to tell her the sex. Then she can know and help u plan. You could do a cake or balloon or a piñata

I heard some one on here has the ultrasound tech right it on a paper and not tell them. They then went to the baker and had them put either blue or pink frosting inside the cake. :) kind of cute. But if it'd a boy I doubt you won't know by looking at the screen.
