5th pregnancy- always eaten deli meat and still do.....

Hi all,

I am on my 5th pregnancy (12, 8, 7, 5). I'm due Due December 16th. Anyhow, I've been reading lately that Deli Meats are a no-no during pregnancy. I've never heard of this until now which is strange. I've always eaten meats during my pregnancies, including hot dogs (not much as I could do without them). All my babies, thus far, have been healthy. So what exactly is it in the meats that are bad for me or the baby? I eat a deli sandwich or a pre-packaged meat sandwich maybe 2-3 times a week. Am I in big trouble for doing so? I am almost 5 months along and no issues thus far, minus the morning sickness, back pain, leg cramps, headaches, etc. (normal stuff). All my blood work came back OK too. Talk to me.....

Blessings,
Tasha

Listeria is a very dangerouse foodbourne illness. It gets in your blood system and crosses the placenta which causes a miscarriage. The thing is it can take anywhere from 20-45 days to even have symptoms so it's hard to pin down where you even got it from. I had this as my report in food safety class in culinary school. I know alot about it now, but up to that point had never heard of it.

You just have to weigh your risks. It's so rare there are actually only about 50 cases a year in the united states.  About two years ago however in a town 60 miles from me there were tons of cases. Huge Hispanic town and they made homemade cheese that was contaminated with listeria. There were alot of pregnancies lost due to it. If you choose to eat soft cheeses make sure they are pasturized.

I just find it weird that I've never been told this with any of my other pregnancies. That makes it seem to me like it's not a HUGE risk factor. So I'll just watch it a bit more carefully. I typically buy pre-packaged thin sliced Turkey and have a sandwich. My fave sandwich is the Chicken in a can (white meat) though. But, I too, will chow down a Subway sandwich if given the chance. LOL! I've just felt different with this pregnancy overall. I don't know why. Our lives are in a pretty bad place right now, so I'm thinking maybe it's the stress and anxiety. I just pray all is OK with the little one. With me too. Liek I said, almost 5 months and no BIG issues. I haven't even been gaining weight yet. I actually lost. Maybe this one won't be an almost 10lb.er like my last one was. Hmmm, maybe the meats contributed to that. LOL! ;-) I hope all of you ladies are doing well. Blessings.

I was also told not to eat hot dogs, deli meats or smoked meats... I really don't know what to think about it but I eat plenty of turkey ham sandwiches but I have been having them as melts so they are heated and have had no problems =)

There is always going to be a risk with anything you eat or do. This is just one choice you have to make for yourself. There is a small risk of contracting Listeria which can be potentially dangerous to you and your unborn baby.

However if you eat your deli sandwiches hot rather than cold you will decrease the risk. So eat a nice, warm roast beef sandwich and don't give it another thought.

I'm on my 3rd pregnancy and my dr never told me not to eat deli meat or hot dogs. I have and will continue to eat both. With my last pregnancy I ate subway 2/3 times a week...I couldn't get enough of it lol. Then again I don't believe in depriving yourself of the food you want/crave when you're pregnant! Besides Losingmymind is right if we listened to everything dr's say not to eat or drink we'd have nothing but crackers and water.

I was told like blue cheeses and stuff.. erm I duno dont eat it LOL
I know there are certain fish like sword fish and stuff....
And with microwave or reheated fooods should be piping hot before you eat or something.
I share food with my cat all the time! A chicken nugget for me, Half for my kitty then I get a kiss LOL... she even eats my strawberries, there is healthy food in my house always cause of my Tortoise and woodland turtle... So I am nibbling their stuff.
There is something about runny eggs?? as well?? And mayo.. if its homemade you should avoid because jarred mayo is pasterised or something??

I dont drink never have and never will do, same with smoking and drugs...
I dont even like perscription drugs Unless I am on deaths door (Like with a migraine has been around for like 2 weeks) then I will take a Paracetamol tab!

I have heard so many things about food. But iif I want it ill munch it! LOL

I was referring to food related things.

You shouldn't smoke, drink or do ANY illegal drugs AT ALL during pregnancy.

Soft cheese...well, that's all I eat.

Certain fish is ok and actually very healthy during pregnancy.

It all boils down to your personal preferences and what your particular doctor recommends.

If at anytime there is a concern about a food, beverage or medication during pregnancy you should ALWAYS talk it over with your ob or midwife

I dont think you should do EVERYTHING by the book because you might have more problems???
I dont eat pate or fish anyways which helps. And I dont drink or smoke! which helps too...
But there is a list of everything you SHOULDNT do. I think as long as you eat healthy as well then you should be fine! But dont do everything by the book because it will prbs go down hill.... No ones life is lived perfectly!! There isnt a book on how to live.. LOL...
As long as you stay away from the main things like
Soft cheeses (Dont like cheese not meant to eat it anyways)
Pate and Fish cause of mercury and smoking ALOT and drinking ALOT then no harm done really. Just check first. There wasnt lists in the good old days, and everyone like my parents are fine... and their parents are okay. So yeah!!
Personally I just eat!
I crave things I am allergic too like Bananananananananaa's so I have to have banana flavoured things like Yazoooooo milkshake, LOL
and Chocolate,But I eat it anyways I will only get a migraine!! So i eat it then go to sleep!
LOL

You CAN eat hotdogs as long as they are cooked, they say you should heat deli meats prior to eating them becuased of the bacteria that can live on cold meats.

I am on pregnancy # 8 (6th to make it past 9 weeks) and out of all the different doctors I've seen for my pregnancies (moving due to military) I have NEVER once been told not to eat deli meats or hotdogs.

No deli meats was the first thing that I was told when I got pregnant. The danger is that it can cause Listeria, which is extremely dangerous to the fetus. I've also heard that you can actually eat deli meats as long as you heat them up in the microwave until steaming hot - that is supposed to eliminate the potential risk of Listeria.
