C section, natural birth

Hello i am just wondering in a c section what actually happens as i have heard some scary stories. Do you have to go in to theatre? What happens after theatre? Who is allowed in the room when having the c section? After theatre do u go on to a ward with other women in the room? On the day of having a c section are you allowed visitors and are you allowed visitors the next day? Also in a c section is a lot of blood lost and do people have to have blood transfusions?

In a c section can you not get a private room ? It must be awkard on a ward with other women .

Natural birth do u get your own private room to give birth in? Will this be on the ward are do u go in a theatre room, after natural birth what happens are u allowed visitors? Also who is allowed in the room during natural birth ?

Someone i know had an elective c section she was in a hospital a week and said to me she had to have tablets before the c section well two days before the operation. Does everyone have to have tablets before a c section a couple of days before?

All comments gratefull just want to see what others have to share with me. Thank you

Each hospital is different andhas their own rules and proceedures. Doctors have their own prefereneces too. My suggestion is to take a tour of the hospital you plan to deliver at and they should be a wealth of information in answering your specific questions. I took a tour of the hospital I will be delivering at and the info I got was amazing. I certainly feel more prepared for the miraculous event that is about to happen.  Good luck! :)

At the hospital I deliver at, I had my own private delivery room for all of my births. I labored and delivered in the same room. My Ob allowed me to have 3 to 4 people as long as they were not in the way. I got a private post partum suite and my DH was allowed to stay the night with me. We went home after 24 hours with all 3 of my babies. Good luck to you.

LIke some of  the other posters said it depends on where you deliver and where you live.

Lol there is a lot of wards, so for example you go in to labour then u go to hospital are you then put in a labour ward with other women? Are your own private room? As other women might mind your family n friends there etc then you go to theatre? Then on to a maternity ward with other wome? So do women that have c section and women that have natural birth get mixed together after having the baby etc what the post natal ward? There's so many lol my friend chose an elective c section she had tablets two days before the c section.

do you have to take tablets for what?
if you are induced you will be given a pessary, either vaginally or some hospitals give you a tablet that you put on your tongue and let dissolve. but if you go into labour naturally there is no tablets you take beforehand that i know of.
if you go into labour at midnight then yes your partner can stay with you in the labour room until you have had the baby. once you leave the labour ward and go back to the post natal ward then he will have to leave (not straight away though, unless he's shattered and wants to!)

A c-section isnt really horrible, the only scarey part is thinking about getting cut open. Yes you go into a OR room, they give you a spinal block which blocks your nerves from basicly under your breast down. then the hang a cover thingy some you cant seem them cutting you and the baby coming out and so you wont see them stitching you up. After the baby is out, they will clean the baby up then let you see the baby while your getting stitched up. Whitch takes longer than opening you and getting the baby out. about an hour to an hour and a half. after that is done you will go to the OR recovery room, and a couple of nurse will watch you until you start having feeling in you lower body again and can move you legs. they will put these massager things on you calves to to help with blood flow and to make sure you wont have blood clots. after they see that you are doing great they will more thatn likely give you a quick sponge bath then its off to you privete room, you are allowed visitors in the OR recovery room as long as its imediate family, then you can have any visitor you want in your privete room.

Depending on your doctor, they might want to put you on only liquid foods, at first then work you up to solid foods. they will ask if your passing gas, this is important because if you arnt then you will still be on liquids until you are able to pass gas. you also will probably have been catheraized, and you will remain that way until you pee is clear. they will give you stool softeners so help with a bowl movements and pain meds.

I wasnt allowed to have anyone in the OR with me because i was in preterm labor  at 32 weeks and have to have a Emergency C-section, because my babys Heart Rate kept dropping and I had been without anmonic Fluid for almost 24 hours so they had to get baby out in a hurry, shes still inthe NICU almost 3 weeks later.

I hope I covered everything. It is a scarey experience, but is worth it if it is an emergency likke preterm labor, but looking back, I had excellent Doctors and have had no complication withthe incision.I'm greatful for my Doctors call to have the C-section instead of letting me have my way and trying to have a vaginal birth. But i wouldnt want to have another C-section.

BTW Im from the USA. not suer how it will go in another country.

Alsothe blood loss is different for everyone I only lost half a pint of blood, n I didnt have to take any kind of tablets the day before but mine was an emergency section so I don't know if it would be different under normal circumstances

When I had my c-section your allowed one person in the theatre with you and that's only if your awake. That's only if it's complication free too, my epidural wore off and my partner was asked to leave theatre straight away.

As for visitors my partner was allowed 9-9 n guests where 2-3.30 n 6-8 but it just depends on your hospitals visiting times, also was only allowed two people in the labour room

I know here of it's an elective you might as elective isn't always medically necessary and might just be for the mothers convience. If it's Emergancy it's done right then and there. When I had my baby (vaginal birth) I was in my own room and had DH and my mom there while I pushed. Then I was allowed up to 4 visiters at a time, not including DH. I have no idea what a theatre room is or anything though. Is it an operating room?

When i had my d and c i kept getting put to the back of the list and having to come back because other emergencies would take priorities. Would that happen if a woman needed a c section and say some one was injured in a bad way and been rushed into hospital and needed the theatre room would they take priority and you would then have to wait for a c section? I just remember people get coming in with emergencies when i needed my d and c so i kept having to wait longer as they took more priority then me.

the day room is for pregnant women at the hospital to use during the day/night, theres a tv in there and magazines to read. or you can have several family members in there to see you, before and after the baby is born.
i can't speak for your friends gf, but i'd say its highly unlikely most hospitals will allow 8 people plus you and 1/2 midwives in the labour room at the same time, the rooms arent massively huge and people would be getting in the way, plus any complications in the labour its not good having that many people in the room. she may well have had 8 visitors to the day room once she'd had the baby though. if you go into labour in the middle of the night your partner will be able to go with you regardless of the time.

I think it depends on where you live, your insurance and any complications... In australia, for an elective c section I was allowed one person in the theatre. My whole family (10people) came to visit later that day and I had lots of visitors throughout my week in hospital. I had a private room. I wish I'd had my dh stay each night...

I guess you would lose a bit of blood, but I didn't need a transfusion. It's a quick procedure, they cut you and get baby out in 10 mins (typically). The stitching afterwards takes a lot longer. So it's good to have baby with you at that stage.

Happy to answer any questions, I had a c section 6 months ago.

I couldn't tell you about in the UK but in the US a lot that depends on the hospital you go to.

What's a hospital day room is that allowed as many visitors u want? What if u gave both late at night are you still allowed people there out of hours. I was speaking to my mates gf last night she said she had a natural birth had three puffs  of gas and air two pushes and baby was out she had eight people in her room whilst giving birth she gave both 1am and was allowed out 10pm next day and had 8 people come to see her together. ? Is that true lol

also wanted to say when i had my 3rd baby, our hospitals new policy was that pregnant mums only shared wards (not disturbance at night by screaming babies) and the mums who'd had their babies were put together on other wards. i also had 2 woman who had a c-sections on the ward with me when i had my 3rd baby and i had a vaginal birth.

Hi,

well I don't know about c section, but for natural birth in the uk, you are usually on a post natal ward with 3 other women before and after you have actually given birth. yes you have a room of your own to give birth in on the labour ward and there are 1 or 2 midwives present depending on how the birth goes and if there are trainee midwives.  during the birth you are allowed up to 2 relatives in with you and before and after labour you are allowed (usually) 2 visitors on the ward at specific times (although your other half can usually stay on out of these hours) or you can have more visitors in the hospital day room at specific times again though.
hope this helps some
