What is the FAM on the ovulation tracker and the purple line associated with it? It just popped up on my tracker....

FAM stands for the Fertility Awareness Method. If it popped up on your chart it might be because it recognized a thermal shift indicative of ovulation. I know when I was charting on fertility friend I had everything set to FAM and it pin pointed O based on several factors.

Destani, I don't know either, but go into your 'My MedHelp' and see if there is a contact area for contacting MH.  If no, let me know and I will contact someone.  I am a Community Leader of a couple of communities so I can find out if you are not able.  You may actually be able to get an answer before me.

Destani, Nicole is right.  I am just not sure what the difference is between the FAM method and the other/regular method.  I too have charted on FF and heard of this method.  But FF has a default method that I always have used.  Again, I am not sure what the difference is in the methods because both seem to use both temps and other fertility signs to pin point ovulation.

FAM uses BBT, CM, position and feel of the cervix to more accurately pin point your fertile days. It can be used for pregnancy achievement or avoidance, and is as accurate as the user allows it to be...just with any other method. Although, I found it hard to pin point my ovulation based on just CM because I have PCOS and had random bursts of ewcm an no ovulation. When I set FF to the default mode it would say I was fertile for weeks at a time because of my cm, so I found it easier and more reliable to use FAM. But, essentially....I think they're all pretty much the same thing or can be used for the same outcomes.

So why would one have a positive opk and suspect to ovulate ( I'm aware that just because you get a positive opk doesn't mean you ovulate) but also have fame agreement which also looks like the day I could have o'd (look at my chart so y'all can see what I'm talking about)????

The FAM is saying that from the info you entered you O on a different day that you got the pos OPK...maybe your opk was picking up that you were going to O soon and not on that day

All an OPK detects is the surge of the luteinizing hormone that occurs 24-48 hours prior to o. I had problems getting a positive OPK and never ovulating. So, personally I don't put much stock into them because they never worked for me. Charting my bbt and cm together helped me out more. So, if you got a positive OPK but no thermal shift til days later, you didn't o when the OPK said.

Yes Relly, I totally agree w/ what Nicole is saying.  I am a HUGE believer in BBT charting.  I can take my temp at any random time of the month and know for sure if I have Oed or not.  I use my BBT and CM along w/ ovulation pain and even sex drive.  I pay attention to all of those things to detect ovulation for sure.  I don't use my cervical position though.  I tried but my cervical position just always seemed to change.  I was told to check it at the same time each day but just didn't give it any thought anymore.  I felt that everything else I was doing was enough.

And Nicole is right as well about having patches of EWCM at different times during your cycle.  For example, I am on CD 16 today.  I had some EWCM on CD 10, but knew good and well that I was not fertile at that time.  I still record it, but I know I won't O that early in my cycle.  About 2 or 3 days ago, I started getting lots of the EWCM.  Being that I am where I am in my cycle, I know O is coming though.  But typically once you O, you won't see the EWCM anymore.  Typically the CM dries up.However, it can be normal to see it a day or 2 prior to AF.  But this is one of the things I really love about Fertility Friend.  It gives you 'tidbits' each day and actually explains all of this.  That's how I learned really.  MH has the tickers, but to my knowledge, they don't explain any of it to you.  I could be wrong.  They may have added more to the ovulation tracker since I used it, but I learned A LOT on FF.

I have never put too much stock into the OPKs either (because of what Nicole said), but many people like them.  The only way to know for sure if you have Oed or not, is by your BBT (without a doctor of course).

It's really a hit or miss with OPK's which is why I stopped using them because I would get positives and would never ovulate. They do work for some women, but I've noticed that in women who have PCOS, they tend to have difficulties with them. Our bodies have an LH surge, but there either is no mature follicle to ovulate or for whatever reason...it just doesn't happen. I took my BBT religiously after 8 months of ttc and a m/c and found out I wasn't ovulating but once every six months. Went on Clomid and conceived the first cycle. I honestly don't think I would have if I hadn't been charting my BBT. But the only reliable source of knowing when or if you ovulated is by your thermal shift or going for a blood test.

Yeah, I always recommend charting BBT to people.  I think some people think it's "too much trouble" or that it takes a lot of time and it really takes no time at all.  I really know my body very well now.  I am amazed by how much more in tune I am now with my body.

I tracked my BBT for a year to avoid pregnancy.  I then got pregnant my first try.

Congrats on your pregnancy!  I am so happy to have another BBT advocate!  I have seen many on this board speak negatively about it :(

I totally agree. I mean I know I've recommended it and people just seem to think it requires too much effort. But I mean really...it took me like a minute each morning. If I hadn't started charting I never would have known that I wasn't ovulating other than going into the OB/GYN after having 60+ days between cycles. It was terrible, and I saved myself a lot of stress. I got pregnant the second time that I ovulated, but had been charting for 6 months.

The only thing that took up time was learning how to chart. Even then I just bought Taking Charge of Your Fertility for $1.50 at a used bookstore and read it until I really understood everything. I honestly wish I would have looked into charting sooner than I did, it would have saved me 8 months of ttc and not really knowing when or if I was ovulating.  But I am so glad to find someone else who likes it as well. It really serves its purpose!
