Family doctor or OB doctor?

I just found out I was pregnant and now need to go to the doctors to confirm the pregnancy. Should I start with my family doctor or go to an OB doctor first? Any advice appreciated!

I live in utah and the office that I go to has OB's and Midwifes.. And you can go to them during your entire pregnancy. Which doctor you see is completely based off of your preference and also which doctor accepts your insurance. But pretty much all doctors there accept the same insurances so you're pretty free to choose whoever you want.

For a midwife appointment you have to be a certain week but if you had complications like miscarriages more then 2 and I'm high risk but my midwife who I saw threw my pregnancy isn't back working I don't know why but Im hoping she's back tomorrow

Some insurance requires a referal from your family Dr before you can see an ob because they're considered a specialist.

I always started out going to my regular general physician, they can draw blood and take urine sample which is as accurate as your going to get early on, there's really no point to go see an OB straight off the bat, a general practice doctor works just as well.

Oh okay. Yeah birthing centers don't take my insurance so I'm happy the hospital has them. But I don't think there's anything wrong with an ob as long as they listen to what you want and a lot don't. Mine was great but always acted like they know best. I want different positions and no c section if not necessary and they'd always answer we will see. I didn't like that so I switched. But if your ob is open minded then that's great

Ericatoday I only have one hospital around me (about an hour away) that has midwives so that's why I said it. Mine is just Drs. Although my friend's mother is a midwife and a Dr! Lol bit she's a bit too far for me.

^^^ I'll be giving birth at a hospital not a birthing center. My hospital employs both ob and midwifes. They're very baby friendly and are really for midwives so I get both feels.

My OB spends time with me and answers any questions I have. I am a nurse so I prefer the hospital delivery feel as opposed to a midwife at a birthing center. I feel safer since I know of all the things that can go wrong even during a perfectly healthy pregnancy.... As for the above post you don't always have to fast for the glucose test. I didn't need to fast for mine.

I went to the OB at my family doctors office and I was not impressed. Could have been because he was fresh out of school, but they don't have the good ultrasound machines, never checked my urine for proteins and all of that (which should be done at every appointment), he told me that with my glucose test I was fine to only fast for about a half hour to an hour before drinking the drink (which the actual time you should fast is 2 hours before drinking it).. I just had a really bad experience with him. I switched to a midwife (I've actually seen 2 midwifes) and it's such a different feel. They are so much more thorough and wonderful with answering any questions and addressing all concerns I may have. I would recommend a midwife over anyone. They're so much better.

Is definitely recommend a midwife. If you're healthy there probably isn't any reason you'd need a doctor. A cnm will give you the medical feel without the price of an obgyn.

I'd start with an OB since that is their specialty.
