Gender Mistake?

A friend of mine from another board announced at 18 weeks that she was having a little girl!  She was very excited because she'd always wanted a girl first.

Well, yesterday, at 21 weeks, she returned to the doctor for another u/s as well as her amnio results.  Her little baby is doing excellently ...but the doctor found something else.  Boy parts!  lol  So her little girl is now a little boy.  She is still very happy and excited (she and her hubby have gone thru several miscarriages) to be having a healthy little baby, but I wondered how often a mistake like this occurs.

I know the picture on those machines is nowhere near HD quality!  lol  ...and if baby's not cooperating very well, doctors might just 'guess' at it.  Has anyone else been told they're having one sex, only to find out later they're having the other?

We are going to take the Jack and Jill blood test at 11 weeks to find out what we are having. The test has only been around a few years and they only do it in Houston as of now.

It happened to me for my first.  The dr told us we were having a girl, but we had a boy.  We didn't think it was "clear" enough so we told people to wait till the baby was born to get gender clothing.

This time there saying it "might" be a girl again, however the baby was moving too much they couldn't get a clear shot.  So we might try again if they let us, if not we will just be surprised.

We did buy one nice boy and girl outfit, and gave them to my mom so she could wash the one  of the correct gender and bring it to the hospital for pics and we returned the other one.

It happens, and it seems to happen more with girls than boys because when you see a boy part chances are that it is a boy (as long as it was a clear shot).

We didn't want to know the first time.  The second time, we did.....the tech looked and looked and kept saying "I think it's a boy"....and then changing her mind and saying she thought it was a girl.  She ended up settling on girl....as much as 70% sure.  We had a BOY in January.....I'm so glad I didn't go out and invest in girl stuff.

i told the tech that I only wanted to know if she was like 100 percent sure. and sure enough my little man was hanging out there! I hope this one is a girl, but I think they would mess up with girls more than boys. at least I have boys clothes just as a back up! : )

Gender predictions are about 80-85% right when done with ultrasound and also depends on the experience of the tech.  In the medical field, that is not a good track record.  I think it happens a lot more often than people know.

I have a friend who was told she was having a girl and ended up having a boy - it DOES happen!!!  Only amnio - and actually delivering your baby, LOL - will give you a 100% accurate reading on gender.

The first guess with both my boys was girl... but at the next ultrasound or when baby moved they changed it to "boy" but since I had amnio's they just said wait until the amnio. With Mason however we got good clear pics of his "parts".

At 15 weeks I was told a boy and at 21 weeks I was told a girl. At 28 weeks confirmed to be a girl.

I had a friend who was told she was having a girl and then delivered a boy. She was pretty upset since everything she had bought was bright pink. During this ultrasound I was told at 14 weeks that I was having a boy and then at 18 weeks they changed it to a girl. I figured that might happen though since it was so early anyways. I think that is why they always say they cant say their 100% sure.

I have the tech check at every us to see if parts grew... with my girls.  With my son - it was clear as day that there were boy parts - and he had his hand on it to boot! (they learn that classy act young!) - I just had another us at 30 weeks and I feel pretty confident she is a girl - but you really never know - there are people that have one or two us and things could be missed - I would think if you are told a girl - there is a possiblity that it could be a boy - but if you are told it is a boy and the cord is no where in sight of the crotch shot - I doubt it would be wrong....

i worry about this all the time...i actually had the u/s tech reconfirm the gender yesterday since i am almost 22 weeks and at 17 weeks they said it was a girl...they showed me the "goods" and there was def nothing there...we saw her from the front and the back and there was no penis so the tech said with almost 100% confidence that its a girl

I have heard this happening before.  Of course this was about 10 - 11 years ago when the technology wasn't as great.  One doctor in our area quit predicting the gender of the baby at his practice, b/c one time they predicted boy and on delivery day, surprise surpirse, it was a girl.  The parents were so upset, they did not want anything to do with the baby.  So the doctor quit predicting sexes.

If, for some reason, they are wrong with me and I end up having a girl, I too would be upset, b/c I wouldn't have anything pink for her, but I would love her just the same.   Some people though ....

At least your friend found out before she bought way too much stuff.

I was told that with my son that he was a girl until about 25 weeks. But I have a happy and healthy 7 year old son. I just don't trust them 100% until your about 25-26 weeks. GL :o)

Hehe ...I wouldn't be too worried about it, seeing as boy parts are much more distinctive than girl parts!  =D  I can see the only drawback being buying a lot of pink or blue stuff ...then finding out your little boy only has little pink dresses to wear!!
