I also work with kids and adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.  The reality is, researchers truly do not know how much alcohol it takes, or if there are certain times it is safe vs. unsafe.  And yes, fetal alcohol is worse then drug addicted babies.  It is brain damage and there is no treatment nor cure for it.  I am not saying that to scare you.  Personally, my opinion (and my OB"s is that the odd drink during pregnancy probably doesn't do any harm).  I just think that before making any decision of this sort, it's important to know the facts is all.  I can tell you that most mom's I know and work with who delivered babies with fasd engaged in binge drinking.  I don't know a single one who claims to have just had an odd drink.  But, the truth is, it isn't known how much is harmful, or when in a pregnancy it is harmful.

I found that my craving for alcohol was totally dependent on my attitude.  I've poored a glass a couple of times and only had a sip before I realized I didn't really even want it!  I drink a cup of tea and have a warm bath and the craving passes:) thought i'd share, coming from a woman who loves her wine!

No amount of alcohol has been shown to be safe. However, it is your call. Personally i usually do satisfy my cravings. I wouldn't if it was something ridiculous like cocaine but if i consider somethin i'm craving will be ok, i have it. It's very much a personal decision.

One glass of wine is not going tofurn your baby into a raging alcoholic. Drs have dif opinions. It could be potentially hazardous but not so much thay sone drs would say its okay. Choice is up to you. Personally, id hold off. But thats me.

My midwife advised against drinking while pregnant, and it was just something that I, personally, was uncomfortable with doing in the first place. I'm not a big drinker even while not pregnant, but I just don't think there's been enough studies done to know how much/little is safe.

Everyone has varying opinions on this topic, and I think it's something that you should address with your doctor before making any decisions.

There is no 100% sure fact on how much/how little alcohol is safe for pregnancy. NO alcohol is 100% safe. Why risk it? I, along with each and every doctor and nurse I work with, would advise against drinking ANY alcohol while pregnant. That baby gets everything mommy gets. It's not worth the risk. Good luck.

My doctor said a glass of red wine was OK here and there. I think its a lot different then drinking a shot. Also, red wine helps with blood pressure. It's ultimately your decision, but I had a glass here and there during my pregnancy and my daughter is fine. As long as you don't make it a habit or drink more then a glass I think you'll be fine. But that is just my opinion.

She's probably just looking for opinions. There's absolutely no reason why she should NOT have written this question.

Not sure why you would ask this question on any of these forums.  You are crossing a very debatedl subject.  Research suggests it is fine along with research suggesting it is not, one physician says you can, and another physician will say you can't.  Ultimately the decision is yours.

I know there are whole cultures that are okay with this, but I used to work with fetal alcohol syndrome babies and kids, and they were sometimes worse off than drug-addicted babies. They don't know how much alcohol it takes to create problems, and after that experience I'd never risk doing that to my child by drinking alcohol.  Maybe you can substitute with fancy grape juice? :)

Sorry, meant to add that the March of Dimes is a trusted name that you can rely on for information, but I would still ask your doctor. Some doctors will okay a glass here and there, but the reality is that research has shown there is no limit known to be "safe"...but on the flip-side, there is no limit known to be "unsafe" either. So it's up to you and your doctor's discretion.

What mommy does, baby does. I think if you didn't drink wine as a habit or just have a little bit you'll be okay.
