Is it too soon to detect a heartbeat?

I just left my doctors office and i had a vaginal ultrasound. They are counting me as being 6 weeks pregnant. I went through iui and they say I ovulated around July 8th or 9th. They stated there was significant growth since fri when I had my last sonogram done. My levels were >5000 on Friday but just had blod drwn today to check them again. The doctor stated that this may not be a viable pregnancy since the heartbeat could not be detected as of today. he said I would just have to wait and see over the next week if the heartbeat shows up? Would there have been growth since Friday  if this pregnancy wasn't viable?

Don't worry about this! it's normal not to get a HB until after the 6w mark. I saw my son's hb at 6w4d, and heard it on doppler at 10w but was lucky to find it since he was so tiny at that time.

I have to go back in 2 wks for another us and we should see more.  They said they saw the yolk sack and they said that was a good sign.

Im sorry about the other embryo not making it but at least if you have one healthy baby that's a blessing itself! When you say your RE said it was too early to see anything yet what did he mean? When did they say you should get checked for a heartbeat?

I just came back from my vaginal us and I should be 5wks5days and all they saw was a sack.  Other than that, they said it looked fine.  My RE said it was too early to see anything yet.  I did have 2 implant and only one is going to make it.

By your ovulation dates above, I would think you are just coming into your 6th week, give or take a couple of days, depending on the length of your cycles.  You could go into the doctor at 6w1d and not see a thing, go back at 6w2d and see a sac, go back at 6w3d and a heartbeat, etc.  As the others mentioned above, there is are changes every single day during that 6th week.  You should see something by next Tuesday, most likely.

Thanks for all the reassuring comments. I hope you guys are right! I am just going to rest for now and try and stay positive. I just feel the doctor was so negative and he made me feel terrible! Plus from when they say I ovulated July 8th or 9th does that calculate to 6 weeks?

Any sort of growth is a good sign....means the pregnancy is progressing. So, I would just hang in there til Friday! You will prob know your blood results tomorrow too...and if they are higher....then things should ease your mind!

I agree with everyone- and I HATE that doctors are so quick to throw the miscarriage card in, especially this early. It IS too early to see a heartbeat. Sorry for all the stress and I hope that your next scan (which you should ask to have done around week 8 or more) brings you much peace.

I agree with Lance. It's most likely too early to see a heartbeat yet. I would wait until you are between 7-8 weeks. If your numbers are doubling properly, then that will be a good sign. The doctor probably should have eased your mind a bit and said that it just may be too early yet to detect a heartbeat, instead of giving the worst right there. And if there was growth since friday, that is a good sign. The earliest I have ever seen a heartbeat was at 7 1/2 weeks. Hang in there.

Yes they are doing another scan on Friday. The he said they would do another one on Tues. Would there be significant growth if the pregnancy wasnt viable?

I hate when doctors tell you things like this so early. It could very much be that it is just too early to see something right now! Every day makes a difference and they say between the 6th and 7th week there is significant growth changes. So, try to relax until your next scan! If your numbers rise from your blood draw today then there is still hope. Are they scheduling you for another scan?
