Matress Wrapping and SIDS

OK - a couple of friends of mine totally freaked me out about SIDS and how it may be prevented by this method called Matress Wrapping.  I went to this website called Eve's Best and read up on it and at some other sites too, and have ordered the wrapping for our crib and bassinnet.  I was just wondering if anyone else has used matress wrapping or looked into it and what are your thoughts on it.

They say there's no way to really prevent SIDS and I believe it to a certain extent.
They make things to help you prevent your baby dying of SIDS.

When my daughter was a younger infant I had this kinda baby pad thing.
I put it in her crib underneath her when she slept.
It was this lil cloth mat that had these 2 lil tube looking things that velcroed to the mat, and a fitted head pillow thing too. It's all padded, there's nothing hard in it at all.
And I'd put her on her back in it and it would keep her from rolling over.
The best way to keep your baby from dying of SIDS is to ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put the baby to sleep on his/her back, NEVER on his/her stomach.

A humidifyer and/or some sort of fan to keep a good air circulation going is also helpful.

Now that my daughter is 7 months old, she sleeps on her stomach because it's more comfortable to her.
I couldn't keep her on her back if I tied her down to the bed. lmao.
She never sleeps on her back anymore it's always her side or her stomach, but she's older now and if she's can't breathe she knows to move her head/body in a more comfortable position. But when they're small like that they don't.

Alot of what SIDS is is lack of good air.
Like breathing in used air over and over.
Like if you put your head under the covers at night and after a while it's hard to breathe cuz the air is hot and gross, then you pull the covers off and it's so much better.
They've linked alot of SIDS cases to that fact.

So little things can make a big difference.
Don't leave stuffed animals and stuff in there when he/she's sleeping on ALWAYS put him/her on her back.

Also, a nice little fact to know is, breastfed babies are much healthier than bottlefed.
The ratio to breastfed and bottlefed SIDS cases are great from what I read.
That's why I chose to breastfeed my daughter, and yeah I don't wanna stop because I enjoy breastfeeding but atleast I made it this far. But you're not supposed to breastfeed while you're pregnant.
So next baby I'ma try to make it to the 1 year mark.

Hope this info helps.
I was paranoid of SIDS too. Most mothers are, but do what you can and hope for the best.

i do all the no no's. i know bad. but the boys can't sleep without mr bear (for brett) and pup (for eli) or without their blankeys. eli always holds pup while pulling his blank up over his head....i don't know why he does that but i noticed....dh does that to. weird huh. while brett holds mr bears paw while putting his head against his and covering up half of his lower body (1 leg covered the other uncovered) while covering all of his upper body....want more weirder...that's how i sleep lol. other then the comforter (which they sleep on, which is on top of the crib sheet....) that's all that's in their cribs.

Honestly, it does seem a little fishy to me.  Not that the crib-wrapping wouldn't be safe to use, but it seems as though this may just be a money-making ploy.

There are certain tips you can follow to help prevent SIDS (such as those suggested by JoyRenee).  Put your baby to sleep on his/her back (eventually as they get older, they will start to roll over onto their tummy's while they sleep, but at that point, the risk of SIDS becomes slimmer)... use the breathable bumper pads (or none)... don't put stuffed animals or excess blankets in the crib (I use a baby blanket for my 8-month old, but I tuck it in very tightly at the bottom... however, this might still be considered a no-no)... and as suggested, you could always buy one of those handy-dandy monitors that keeps track of babies breathing.  It's normal to worry about these things.  That's what mommy's are best at, after all.  =)

I guess this part of the website makes me wonder a little bit too. The tips they give you on what to use while you wait for your wrap to arrive seem like they could actually cause SIDS.

The theory is that the chemicals in the mattress can cause breathing problems for the baby. I was searching around online and I cannot find any info that actually states that mattress wrapping prevents SIDS, other than the websites that actually sell mattress wraps. I dont know, it seems a little fishy to me.

Never heard of it. Could you explain what it is?

Tight-fitting sheets are all that you need in the crib. Bumpers pose a SIDS risk, especially if baby loves to snuggle their face into fabric. A member here lost her 8-month-old nephew to SIDS because of his blanket. So nothing but a tight-fitting sheet in the crib (and breathable bumper) are recommended by the SIDS foundations and American Academy of Peds and other organizations.

Theres no way to TRULY prevent sids... only ways to monitor for it (like worriedbabe)  With TJ I have a monitor where I can hear him breathing usually. He's 9 months old now so I worry less about it. I'm a bad mommy lol because he sleeps with lots of blankets (I check on him all the time)

i think every mother freaks about sids. i bought a monitor that measures breathing movements and sounds an alarm if there are none for 20 seconds. it was my best purchase with my last son and was only about fifty pounds. i shall be using it with this son aswell. i also followed all the rules for preventing sids i was given in leaflets at the hospital when i gave birth.
