My Labour Story

At 3:19 pm, on April 23, 2015, my baby boy officially made his entrance in to the world ! I was 39+3 and a ftm. Just wanted to share my experience (:

After my 38 weeks appointment, after being checked and my cervix was still posterior and not ready, I began inserting evening primrose oil vaginally (1500mg a night). By my 39 week appointment, I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced ! My doctor did a membrane sweep, which almost immediately started contractions. Two days later, my contractions had not progressed, and my doctor did another membrane sweep (I was now 4cm dilated and 95% effaced) Much stronger contractions started immediately after the appointment, and I kept walking and doing squats to help them progress. My goal was to stay home as long as possible, but by 1 on the morming, my contractions were so strong, and about 2 minutes apart, so we headed to the hospital. The nurses wanted me to walk around the hospital for a couple hours since I wasn't requesting pain medication, and I was admitted at 3:30 in the morning. I hadn't wanted to have the epidural, but my contractions were the most painful thing I had ever experienced, I was begging for them to stop. First I tried laughing gas, but I wasn't breathing calmly enough for it to work. I then tried morphine but it didn't help. So at 4:30 in the morning, and 5 cm dilated, I got the epidural, which (although I wanted to go natural) was a lifesaver ! It completely took away the pain, and I slept through most of my hard abour. just before noon, the doctor broke my water, and By 1 pm, I was 9.5 cm dilated and 100% effaced, but I wasn't getting the urge to push. By about 2 pm the doctor started helping me feel my contractions. The first half of pushing was easy for me, I was even laughing through it because of the epidural. The second half was the most excruciating pain I had ever experienced but it was so worth it ! I pushed for an hour and a half, and at 3:19pm, April 23, my baby boy was born ! I had no external tears, but tore badly internally and required stitches. I lost a lot of blood, and ended up passing out after walking back from the bathroom. I'm not going to lie, no one warned me about the pain after the birth was over, but it was so so worth it ! To all of you nervous ladies, trust me, it can be done ! Positive thoughts and a good support team will get you through it. I'm so glad to finally be holding my little one.
