OT- DS and his pacifiers

So DS will be 2 at the end of next month and i've been trying to slowing wean him off his binkys. I've gotten it to where during the day he never notices i put them away in his closet organizer where he cant reach when he first gets up in the morning. My problem is that if i ever tried to put him down for a nap or bed without one I dont think he would ever go to sleep.  As soon as we finish our bed time routine (bath if its bath night, give him a few drinks of water, change his diaper, feed his fish) and we go in his room he automatically starts looking for his binky. And if he loses it in the middle of the night he cries until he either finds it or i come in and find it for him (otherwise he's been sleeping through the night ever since he finally got adjusted to moving and his toddler bed and before we moved he'd been sleeping through the night since about 18 months on a regular basis). I'm afraid if he's not done using his binky by the time i have DD he will try and steal hers. I talked to his pedi and he said not to really worry about it unless after his sister comes that i have a hard time getting him not to steal hers and to wait until he's about 3 to get rid of it that wasnt a problem.

I'd come to terms with just waiting and seeing how he does when DD is born until a few days ago when putting his binky away when he got up that he is starting to chew threw the silicon to the point where its almost completely off! I'm so afraid he's going to swallow and choke on one! I check them every day now when he gets up and before i put him down for a nap/bed.

If you ladies and any advice at all i would be so grateful!

I quit cold turkey with my daughter (sneaky little thing had a stash too) before I got preggo. First couple days were hard but then she just forgot about them. Her little sister now uses them and she doesnt try to steal them or anything.

I just took it away one day when my son was almost two. Everytime he asked for it I said sorry mommy can't find it. it is all gone. He looked for it for couple of days and the he forgot about it. He started sleeping through the night after that.

I think this is repayment for him being so easy to wean off the bottle and move into his toddler bed, both of which were extremely easy.

I think after this hectic week (babysitting my 3 brothers ages 12 and twin 10 year olds while my mom is out of town) i will try the reward system and binky fairy and worse comes to worse if that doesnt work we'll do cold turkey.  I'm just definitely not doing it this week while i have my threelittle brothers!

We went cold turkey.  When my daughter was 2 I had her throw them all in the trash.  She was fine for a bit, but then started crying later on.  I noticed that she kept wanting to go to her room... She had a stash of them hidden!  After we got rid of those, it took about 2 weeks before she stopped ctying for them.  It was very hard on her.

yeah i've tried all of the above mentioned methods...and I have a confession to make. My name is Ashe and my 2-year-old still uses a binky, lol.

Seriously....she was down to ONLY using them RARELY when she woke up at night, but now that her baby brother is here...she went on a full binky regression. and it's impossible to keep them away from her since HE uses them...so we're slowly weaning her back down. now she only uses them at night again but for a few weeks there it was all day every day. I think it was a "security blankie" because she was insecure with the new baby here...now that things are settled we're going back to potty training and binky weaning.

if you find a method that works, let me know! but for now all we do is NOT mention or show them to her and she usually doesn't think about it....the only time she looks/asks for one is bed now, and she wont' sleep without one...but since she was able to just a few months ago we're thinking that she'll eventually wean back down it's just going ot take patience. good luck hon...oh, and, my daughter was chewing through hers too a few weeks before her 2nd birthday but just randomly stopped..so hopefully your little one will do the same.

Yeah my sister did the Binky Fairy thing. The Binky Fairy brought gifts in exchange for the binky. It's basically bribery but it worked for her kids. I think it just depends on the kid though. Maybe since there is a another baby on the way, you can convince him to give up the binkys for the new baby? Good Luck!

I didn't have a binki problem because my son weaned himself off it when he was 6/7 months old. BUT I have heard of mailing them to the babies at the hospital, or sending them to the "binki fairy"...make it a big deal about him being two and being a big boy, and binkis being for babys and that baby sister will need them, but not him because he's a big boy.

cut the ends off and act like he bit the ends off and they are now broken. I have a friend that did that and my sister went cold turkey. One of that method is best and it may take a day or two but he will calm down about it. Or you can also mark a day on the calender an show him every day like a count down, like it is a big day and exciting that he will be 2 and ..... and that day is the day he will get to throw his binky away and then he gets ....... a toy for big kids. then at night or evertime he gets it talk about that toy and make a big deal of it. then afte he throws them all away, empty the frdge out of throw lots on top for if he goes back to find them. never an easy feet! I had two that used them and two that did not and for the life of me do not remember how I did it, I know it was not bad cuz I took them away before a year. Something to maybe do with the next one.
