Pregnancy and Sports

I am currently on a co-ed softball team and today I just took two pregnancy tests and they both said "pregnant".. I haven't gone to the doctors yet, but what I was wondering if I should not play or if I could play until I go to the doctors.. I should be 4 1/2 weeks today..

Thanks... Yesterday was my softball practice and EVERYONE asked why I wasn't playing.. I told them that I hurt my leg and I couldn't play today..  ( which I did hurt my leg, but it was getting better)... I just hope I can get a doctors appt soon so I don't have to lie to them anymore

First of all Congratulations!!  Even though Softball isnt much of a contact sport, I wouldnt chance it. You never know if someone is going to try to slide into a base, or you could accidentally trip and fall or someone could run into you while you are trying to catch a ball in the outfield. I dont know what position you play, but just to be safe for the baby's sake, I would hold off on softball until after the little one is born. Too many "what if's" involved. :-)

just say you are sick for some other reason, until you are ready to tell them the truth (or until you have conformation)

You don't want to take a line drive to the belly!

I just don't want to tell anyone on the team that I am pregnant until I go to the doctors... Right now we are only having practices.. our season doesn't start until May 18th.. Hopefully I will have an appointment by then and then I could tell the team!

When i was pregnant I was told not to ride a bike... hmm...  I agree, find something to cover your baby if it is that important.

I had to stop playing soccer when I found out I'm pregnant. Any contact sports are out or any where there is a chance you'd fall (like skiing or something).  Activities that you are used to doing - like biking/running you can keep doing. I can't imagine that playing softball would be a huge issue - just don't go sliding to steal a base!!  Do a search on-line to see what you can find.  If you feel uncomfortable doing it - than stop. If you don't think you're putting yourself or your baby at risk - then game on!

I dont mean to scare you and yes there are a lot of sports that are safe during pregnancy but I know a woman that was on the volley ball team, she thought it would be ok to continue because she was very fit and wasnt showing at all by 5 month so she stayed and during a game got hit in the stomach with a ball and ened up losing her baby. Things happen all the time and if it were me I would give it up for your babys sake....Its only a short time and a little sacrafice..You will have the rest of your life to play softball:) Good luck with whatever you choose:)
