Anatomy scan (ultrasound) is anywhere from 18-22wks. Just ask your doctor.. they try to wait until 20wks now, but I was going out of town so they did mine a week earlier as it can be done at 18wks. I had my quad screening at 16wks & it did not tell the gender. The test your talking about would have been around 11-12wks, that is the CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling). That test is rarely administered to young mothers as it carries greater risks than the quad test. It does tell the gender because it is looking for characteristics of the disorders it identifies (ie: is one gender/sex more likely to have this abnormality).

When I got my quad screening I was 17 weeks and I saw the midwife got to hear the babys heartbeat and she sent me to the lab to get the tests done.  Thats it. She told us she didnt feel it was medically necessary for an us. You can always ask tho. Never hurts to ask.

The quad screen is a blood test. Gender ultrasounds are typically done between 18 and 20 weeks. My office actually won't do a second ultrasound until 20 weeks.
