Steroids for Lung Development

I recieved two steroid shots at 33 weeks, the shots were given 24 hours apart.  The doctors were afraid that I would deliver early- I have severe irritable uterus and have contracted every 5 or so minutes for about 12 weeks now.  I am home on bed rest at the moment, and the doctor has said that she will do my c-section at 37 weeks just to give me some peace, but not without doing an amnio first.  I am wondering if anyone knows the likelyhood that the baby's lungs will show up as mature. Will the fact that I had steroids work in our favor, or do they only work for 48 hours after administration and then quit working?

Thanks for any help!

I was on bed rest in the hospital from 19 weeks on - 2 courses of steriods at 26 and 28 weeks... my daughter was born at 32 weeks from a complication of a UTI - but her lungs were healthy... I wish you all the best

I don't know about the steroids but I know my friends baby came naturally at 37 weeks and his lungs we not mature enough yet, but I also know people who have their babies at that time who were just fine! I will keep you and your little one in my prayers that the amnio comes back ok so you can hold that percious bundle of joy! God Bless

Does anyone know how long the effects of the steroids stay in the baby's system?

There is really no telling if the baby's lung will be developed or not. It is a good thing your doctor is doing an amnio first. There is a woman on these forums who was doing what you are and going to have a c-section early, (at 37 weeks too) but the doctor did an anmio and the lungs weren't developed so they have to wait. She also had steroids. It all depends on the baby. Some are developed by then, some aren't.
