Usage of oral contraceptives

Madam,

I got married in 2004 and was blessed with a girl child in April '05. On the advice of a gynaec doctor I started using oral contraceptives (Mala-D) from April '06 on the assurance of the doctor that they are 100% safe. Everything was normal. For the last 6 months I observed a gradual decrease in bleeding during periods. Atlast when 15th June '09 was my actual due date, I did not get my periods till month end. I consulted a nearby gynaecologist (not the one stated earlier) on 28th June '09. She did pregnancy test and confirmed that the same was negative. However she warned me that continuous use of oral contraceptives without break is not at all safe and she advised me to stop them immediately. She also advised me to go for loop insertion and asked me to visit her again when the period comes. I stopped using Mala-D from the same day. During the intervening period from 1st July '09 to 1st August '09 I did not get periods but observed scanty bleeding at very frequent intervals which stopped within half or 1 day. Finally, since two days i.e, on 2nd and 3rd August '09, my periods started but with profuse bleeding.

In the circumstances explained above, please advice me :
(i) how safe are oral contraceptives i.e., can I start them again. If so, do I need to give a break in between.
(ii) shall I go for loop. I heard that loop insertion is very painful and leads to heavy bleeding.

Kindly advise me at the earliest.

With regards

Rama

1). In the US they are considered safe and some women use them for years.

2). I have no idea what a loop is.

I think the loop is another name for the IUD; where I live, that's what most women call it

Thanks, Yazzay.

Then yes, an IUD/Loop can lead to heavier periods.
