What hurts more, the contractions or pushing the baby out?

I am pregnant with my first and planning on doing a natural birth. My mother had all four of us natural. I'm just curious to see which one hurt the most from mothers who had no epidurals.

I would say the contractions are a lot worse than the actual pushing, when your pushing that's all you can focus on cause it's such a strong sensation it's pretty much indescribable! For me the contractions were agony especially when it I hit second stage labour and as soon as my waters got broken I was having contractions every 2 minutes and they were soooo intense! Pushing for  me took 5 minutes and I had a huge tear and it took the midwives and doctors two hours to stitch me back up lol, but all in all I loved my labour it was pretty quick (9 hours) the stitching afterwards was the worst part about the whole labour and birth process for me :) if our bodies couldn't deal with it then no one would have more than one child lol!

I had the epidural with my son. I had terrible contractions but even with the epi I felt him come out. It hurt really bad. And the ring of fire is terrible. But it differs from person to person. Iv know some women who swear childbirth is the most...pleasurable?... thing they have ever  felt. And some that swear they will never do it again it hurt so bad. I'm sorta iffy on it myself since I want a big family.

I just gave birth 18 days ago, my son was 7 pounds 11 ounces, it won't last forever if you go natural. You can do it, its worth it!!! Its the most empowering feeling ever going natural!!

To be honest the pushing didn't hurt me! When my son was crowning, i felt burning but didn't hurt at all. It was the easiest part of labor haha and I even had a 2nd degree tear. The contractions are no joke. I went all natural, and idbdo it over and over again in a heart beat.

I say contractions! Contractions couls go for hours or days. And pushing is just couple minutes to an hour.. and the pain is all over when you pop that baby out.

Contractions are painful and get worse as they go along. I'm pregnant with baby number 3 so it's do-able lol. I think when your at the pushing stage it's such a strong feeling of pushing that that is all your concentrating on. Just listen to your midwife and you will be fine.
I had gas and air only with my second and certainly won't be doing it like that again
I could feel everything! Very sore.
With my first I had pethidine and gas and air,  was a much easier less painful birth so Look that up :) I'll be using that again this time around. Calmed me down Alot more than just gas and air too..  Good luck

Congratulations to you both for your babies :) I'm hoping my little girl is not too big so she could make it a bit easier for me!! lol thank you I'm really excited now thinking about her in my arms :) I'll just focus on that image and feeling I'll have finally having her. I'm sure that will distract me from being such a scaredy cat :p

I had my first natural birth last week and am so glad I did. I think it's equal, but they're different pains. Contractions are one thing, but pushing is stinging, stretching. But pushing doesn't last forever. Contractions seem to. I don't know about anyone else but the actual birth where her head came out wasn't the worst. As soon as the doctor said ok lets get ready for delivery and got her overcoat on and everything a peace washed over me and I was calmed. A few min later my girl was in my arms. I didn't tear or rip at all, so that makes a lot of difference too. I am so glad I did natural. Recovery has been so much easier because of it. Good luck! I hope it goes well for you!

I have to agree too that the contractions hurt way more but then I have to say my son was only 6lb 9 and I didn't tear just had a slight graze after 3 pushes ;)

Thank you! I'm trying to mentally prepare. Looking up breathing techniques and what not also to deal with the pain. I'm determined to do it natural. I'm afraid I'll freak out because of the pain and forget to breath like my cousin had with hers haha

CONTRACTIONS! I just had my son three months ago (FTM) and went natural. With pushing , you're working with the contractions so it's much easier. You CAN go natural. Remember , it doesn't last forever. Good luck (:

Ouch :| I guess I'll have to see how I feel about the contractions first. I can deal very well with pain usually, but I don't know :/ I'm nervous.

They both hurt just as bad but each one a completely different pain to the other contractions are like extreme period pains that make you curl over and pushing is a burning, tight, stinging,  ripping feeling
