When should you get your first ultrasound in pregnancy?

Is there any formal recommendation for this?  Doctors seem to do it at different times.  I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks!  I hear of girls with no complications at all routinely getting them at 8, 12, 16 and so on weeks.  Is this a waste of money? Or is it worthwhile medically speaking to get 2 to 6 ultrasounds during pregnancy?

I think it depends on where you live, and how your pregnancy is going. I'm in Canada, and usually, if all is fine, you will only get your anatomy scan, possible a dating scan as well. With both of my pregnancies, I had more than one because I was measuring large, had high BP, and my second one was showing a calcification near his stomach (everything ended up being fine).

I just knewstraight away what was wrong. Wasted a week arguing with them that I was pregnant as they were only doing theirstandard urine tests and should’ve been blood as hcg is lower. And then another week arguing that it was ectopic so was 7 weeks and ruptured during surgery. If they’d listened to me in the first place medication might’ve done

I have to have them very early on but that’s because I’ve had an ectopic

Oh, well of course.  That makes perfect sense.  When did they catch your ectopic?  How far along were you?
