Will I be okay if I used cleaning supplies while pregnant?

I’m 34 weeks and just got into a new house that needed to be cleaned up a bit. I used some cleaning products and now am really worried. The products made my asthma act up and I’m hoping nothing affected my baby! Please help me refrain from worrying about this!!!

Hi there.  Congrats on the pregnancy.  34 weeks! Almost done and ready to meet baby.  Try not to worry.  I understand though as I worried a lot too.  It tells me you'll be a great mom as you are already concerned for the welfare of your baby bean.  At 34 weeks, your baby has already gone through a LOT Of actual development.  Things are 'maturing' more so than developing.  :>)

You did this one major time, I'm guessing all will be fine. Best to ventilate a room if cleaning from now on.  There may be a link between cleaning products and raspatory issues and wheezing but that is not well studied and I would not think that would happen at all with a one time big cleaning.  From now on, open windows when you clean, look for some green products (baking soda works really well on some things, vinegar and water, etc).  I fertilized my law when pregnant with one of my kids.  I wasn't thinking!!  And they were not born with three heads.  So, I would  just be careful from not on and not worry.

What is the new place like?  That's exciting too!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question. I worry about everything including doing my best to stay away from any harmful substances around me such as a cigarette while walking into Walmart, I normally hold my breath until I can get into the store itself. The environment is really what gets me worked up as I know that I can’t change other people’s actions, but I try my best to avoid as much as possible. This was the first time since I’ve been pregnant that I’ve even used any kind of product. I cleaned for like 20 mins without a mask when I first got here then I picked up some gloves and masks the second half of cleaning, but could still smell some of the bleach through the mask, but overall I was only around it for like maybe an hour! And I had a few asthma problems but I took my inhaler regularly as well as was sick too. I think I’ll be okay, but I just needed someone to reassure me, but I will not be cleaning again until after the baby is born if need be.

Yes, think you'll be okay!  You can still clean but just ventilate and use different products than bleach based.  :>)  I was really nervous too so I get it.  But then I did things like I painted a room (nursery) and my husband walked in and was like "um, don't you want to open a window". And I was like "oh, poop. ya, I should do that."  Oh well.  lol  We do the best we can.  So, what month is your baby due?  How has the pregnancy been going?

My little girl is due on March 16th and it’s been going extremely well except for the environment around me and my habit of overworrying lol! This is my first child, so I’m definitely very excited and want her as healthy as she possibly can be! I believe as long as I stay on my toes everything will work out just fine in the end! She is my whole world already and I’m so excited to finally be able to meet her!

Ahh, I can tell how excited you are!  Such a special time in your life.  So, your last month.  My recommendation is to do some nice things for yourself.  You have a little less 'me' time once you have your sweet baby so do a few little indulgences just for you before she gets here.  Have a date night too.  :>)  Anyway, keep in touch and hope you love the new home.  hugs

I’m beyond excited! The new home is good, but we do seem to have a roach problem, so I was wondering as to whether I could use a no mess fogger that leaves no residue behind. I havent been okay with doing this, but I’ve tried other natural methods that don’t seem to be working, so if I stay out of the house and have someone come in to air out after stayed away for the appropriate timing and clean the house afterwards with no bleach products and take everything such as dishes and clothes out of the house beforehand, will the baby be alright? And will I be safe to be inside without worrying about any fumes at all? I’ve never done this before, but have read a great deal on it and some people are saying that as long as I’m out and take good caution of doing the right thing than I will be fine, but some are saying to just avoid it altogether. Please help!! I don’t know what to do and am really concerned!

Always best to check with your doctor but your baby should be fine! You are fairly far along so less risk and I read that you should air your house out for 1/2 hour after not going in 2 to 4 hours after bombing for bugs. So, if you wait a couple hours, then open windows, you should be all good! :))

Thank you! That’s what I read as well, but I do have a hard time trusting people as far as deciding what’s best for my child goes because not everyone cares. I’m still not fully set on bombing yet, but something needs to be done. I will talk to my doctor, but still no guarantees yet. Again, thank you for your help!

Do it on a day you can get out for the day and it shouldn't be a problem at all, hon!  I'd do it now rather than have the bugs when baby arrives!  :>))

My doctor basically told me about fumes that unless you dunk your head in the cleaning liquid, it is not going to hurt you. I'd check on the website of the roach-killing product and see if there is an FAQ list that involves the residue around pets or children. But if it is a no-residue product I wouldn't worry.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post. I have read up on the roach- killing product and it seems to leave no residue like normal bombs do according to reviews and what it has on the box! I also would like to know if being around my spouse while he vapes will harm the baby? I’ve read up on it and it does say to avoid it because of the chemicals that e cigarettes do contain, but how do I avoid it while riding in the car with him? Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question!
If your spouse vapes around a baby he is being super uninformed. Did you know that the rate of crib deaths is higher for children of smokers even if they do not smoke around the baby? It's the residue. Would you think there is less residue from vaping? Over the course of a day, the darn things give users more nicotine than cigs.
Here is one article about SIDS and vaping.  https://www.nhs.uk/news/pregnancy-and-child/vaping-and-using-nicotine-patches-pregnancy-linked-cot-death/
Thanks for taking the time to comment on my post. All things worry me like crazy. If he does it I move away so nothing hits me at all and when I’m in he car I roll down all the windows and make him blow it out the window away from me so I don’t get hit with any smell or anything at all. I told him that it’s harmful, but he believes otherwise. I just read what you commented to me and he looked shocked! Again, thank you!

He tells me to constantly stop worrying and that the baby isn’t fine china, so I think I’m just going to let it go and stop worrying about it.. whatever happens just happens because there’s really nothing I can do anyways.
You could certainly do something about him vaping around the baby, though. You might be worrying about nothing at this point, such as worrying about cleaning supplies, which seems to me to be over the top. But when the baby is born, he should take seriously the health issues he is putting himself at risk for and the baby as well, when it comes to the amount of nicotine intake related to vaping.
Thank you for responding to my comment. I have stopped worrying a great deal about things. If I do happen to breathe some of the vape in I know that it’s not the end of the world. And I only used cleaning supplies once since I’ve been pregnant, so I do know that everything is going to be okay, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. He’s not going to vape around the baby and if he does it by mistake every once in awhile, I know that everything is going to be okay. Again, thank you for commenting and have a great day!
