Question for my sister-in-law about pain in the 20th wk...

Did anyone else have sharp, stabbing pains right in the lower center of your belly (right at the bottom of your uterus, I would guess) at around 20wks? pains that rise in a crescendo and linger for a few minutes before abating? My sister-in-law is having these pains that stop her up short and cause her to curl up in pain and she keeps trying to brush them off as round ligament pain... She says they only happen when she moves so that HAS to be what they are, but the other night at dinner I watched her curl up in pain in the middle of taking a bite of something and I KNOW she wasn't moving...

she refuses to go be seen but I'm worried about her and starting to get irritated that she won't go... she's got several risks and possibilities of complications because of poor health, but she plans to wait this out until her next appointment...February 20-something!!!!!!!!!! Did anyone else have pains like this that were round ligament pains? I remember round ligament pain feeling like an electric shock or a stretching, almost sprain-like feeling that abated after a few seconds, not a stabbing pain that crescendos and stays around for a few minutes before abating... I'm worried about pre-term labor, or problems with her health and I just need some advice to give her from someone who's had this before. so if you had something like this and can tell me what to tell her to do I would be very grateful... I'm upset that she won't go. Her husband was asking me "is this normal???" in such an upset voice the other day because he's so worried!!!

Thank you!!! I'll tell her your story, and I really hope she listens... our mother-in-law is an OB and even she was saying "this is not normal, you need to be seen" but she just kept brushing it off. HER mom says "being pregnant hurts so suck it up" and since her mom obviously knows everything she's ignoring sister-in-law (me) who's been pregnant before too and, worse, mother-in-law with 20 years experience in OB... maybe a story of someone who's actually been there will get her to go in!! thank you again

She should REALLY get in to the OBGYN or ER. she could be in early stages of preterm labor which is NOT good. It sounds like your describing contractions and if they're hurting her so badly she has to curl over it sounds like more than simple braxton hicks too (practice ctx)
your right that ligament pains are sharp, however when I had them I also had some where my ligaments caused all day pain for a few days and then also sharp stabbing sensations but they weren't preterm labor.

encourage her to go in and get seen even if it isn't a "big deal" to her she doesn't want to have that baby so early he/she wouldn't survive or have good chances and she'll regret it if she IS in labor and doesn't listen to her body or her family... I had preterm ctx that had to be stopped with meds 6 times total starting at 21 or 22w. I had my lil man who was due xmas day on Dec 9th at almost 38w.. Even though the times I was in it was for false alarms I'm very happy because of the reassurance I got from  the dr's who saw me when they said the contractions weren't causing cervical change. When I went in the last time with ctx it WAS the early signs of labor (ctx 3min apart even after 3 LITERS of IV fluids) but at that point he was ok to be born.
