Aaahh, well that happened with my first one.  It felt like I was carrying a bowling ball between my legs, the pressure was horrible!  I was told to stay off my feet or to walk around if I  wanted to get things going.  It didn't happen until about 3 weeks before I had her, but I lasted.  Good luck to ya!!

I have had two little girls, my body dilated early both time.  With my first I started at 2 cm and a week later I was at 3 then quickly went to 4 and stayed there for 3 more weeks.  I was very uncomfortable and I was very much done, but still had to be induced on my due date.  My baby was turned slightly the wrong way so I was told that was why I didn't progress any further into labor...and she was 9 lbs and 3 oz.  Since I had such a large baby the first time my second doctor induced me 2 weeks early (we monitored my baby's growth to make sure she was ready), I was 3 cm for a few weeks before going in for her as well.  She was born at 7 lbs13 oz :)
It is very possible to dilate earlier and still hold out.  I felt like I was carrying a bowling ball on my pelvic floor whenever I walked around, I was being told at ever apt that I wasn't going to make it to the next...I surprised everyone i guess :)
I hope all goes well for ya, take it easy and do whatever the doctors tell you to :)

i went into labor at  34 weeks. i dialated 2 cm at 24 weeks and was 50 % effaced and went for another 10 weeks. when i did dialate i was put on full bed rest which is the only reason why i made it. so if your doc put you on bedrest you stay in bed. unless you have to pee or what not. have whoever is with you (whether it's your husband, bf, fiance, mom, dad, aunt, cousin or friend) do EVERYTHING for you. eat in bed, read in bed.

i was pregnant with twins so we knew i'd go into labor early...we were actually surprised i lasted as long as i did. (my ob thought i'd go no later than 29 weeks...luckily my children don't listen and stayed in for an extra 5 weeks) my guys are now extremely healthy, active 18 month olds. so premature labor wouldn't be completely horrible. my guys spent 1 night in nicu and the rest of the time either in my room or in the nursery under bili lights (they did have a slight touch of jaundice). they spent 2 extra days in the hospital (the hospital i was at requires all mothers to spend 3 days in the hospital so my guys were in a total of 5 days).

good luck.

Then I would do as he says and stay in bed.  Try using pillows to get comfortable and perhaps taking some warm bathes to sooth the pain in your back.  You don't want to dilate anymore for now.

Some people do and some don't.  I know I was at 1 cm for about 3 weeks and I had to be induced.  It sounds like you may go earlier.  As long as you make it to 37 weeks, the baby's lungs will be matured enough.  Was the doctor concerned about pre-term labor?  He may want to consider steroid shots for the baby's lung development.
