cochlear implant

For those of you who haven't seen my older post just to inform you I am 14.1 and my boyfriend is deaf so my baby has a 50/50 chance of being deaf and a friend was asking if I would get a cochlear for my child  if he/she is deaf. I said no. For those of you who have no idea what that is, its a device/implants that is permeate but it is used to allow the deaf person to hear. Its like a hearing aid attached to something to your head and you can ten it off or on. My reason for saying no is because I want my child to be able to understand what it means to be deaf and that nothing is wrong with it an if later in there life when they can understand the surgery better  if they want it then will get them
I was just curious what you mommy's would do in this situation and what is you opinion?

CODAs are awesome lol I just like that my baby will be more accepting of different people being born into a different kind of family

My bf signs pigeon I learned asl but picked up SEE for him. I just wanted opinions because everyone that I have told I might have a deaf baby are trying to tell me to get it soon. I strongly disagree with their advice so I was curious how many other people felt the same :)

I appreciate your opinions ! ^_^

I'm not sure what I would do. My husband is hard of hearing. I might decide to get the child the implant so they don't have that deaf accent. But we'll be teaching them ASL no matter what. My husband grew up hearing and Bill Vickers (deaf community leader, website lifeprint.com) said Daniel could give me a sign name because he's a member of the deaf community now. Your kid doesn't have to be deaf to be a member of the deaf community. CODAs are awesome.

Personally it would be hard for me to make that decision and I admire the one you made. I wish more people felt this way about circumcision. Apples and oranges I know but that's what it made me think of.

I would do the same. I was about 3 when I was introduced to pigeon signed english and took ASL in high school. I do believe it should be the childs choice once they are old enough to understand it.

I would do the same as you. I think as long as baby isn't born with anything life threatening or dangerous then they should be left alone and to make those decisions on their own in the future.

Momma I love your choice and admire your determination. Im teaching my daughter ASL bc I want her to see the beauty in communicating in all ways, not just verbally. Language is more than words. You go!! :)
