down syndrome

Im 22 yrs old, 4 months pregnant with my first child. I was told that the baby has a risk of having down syndrome and I will be doing the amnio test to find out. I am really scared. Any tips for the amnio test? Or any tips at all.

I have an older sister with Down Syndrome she is going to be 40 on her birthday. I am 21 and am on my second pregnancy. My almost 4 year old is healthy and I refused all testing with her because really its more stressful to go through the testing. I did have the panorama test with this but only to find out the gender. I would never recommend having amniocentesis done. Frankly if you are going to have the baby regardless if he or she is downs why risk a miscarriage to find out? Doctors can recommend all of these test but you are the mom you have a say!

Being young and being that this would be my first, i keep getting advice whether to keep or terminate the pregnancy. Like the doctors are already like so whats your plan if the baby has downs. All it does is put more stress on me and make me really think that the baby does have it. Its such an emotional rollercoaster that when i see other babies i breakdown and cry. But than i hear so many stories where doctors swear up and down that a baby will be born with downs and they come out healthy. I am afraid of making any decision and not be sure about it.

My cousin was told that her baby #6 was coming with down. And he was born normal. I don't get these dumb tests just scaring  mothers left and right.

My mother in law had it done with my boyfriend the test came back positive, he came out healthy. However he had spinal meningitis because I guess when they did the test the doctor must have actually poked him with the needle which caused him t (That's what the doctor told me when I gave family history for my current pregnancy) also my friend had it done and the test also came back positive and her baby came out perfectly healthy. Don't worry mama.

Not really about the test but My GodBaby has
Down syndrome and she is soo amazing,! And smart and she goes to school and talks, uses the potty and loves to clean ,! She is three and I wouldnt trade her any time. If your baby does have it , it just means everything they do is just that much more amazing,! Good luck ,!

I had an amnio with my first  pregnancy because other testing showed a high chance of downs turns out I carry a genetic condition that was effecting the baby sadly this resulted in the baby not developing properly and My hubby and I made the decision to deliver my baby boy at 22 weeks it was heart breaking. I'm now 13 weeks 3 days pregnant with a baby girl and waiting on test results since my hubby and I decided to do the cvs test since you can get the results faster than an amnio but things are looking better so far for me this time. Not trying to scare you it could be nothing but I really recommend the testing. The amnio was not painful just very uncomfortable.

With theearly screening there is a 5% chance that you'll be put into a higher risk group than you actually are. As far as the amnio that is a definite yes or no.

Usually accurate. but can cause miscarriage. They stick a needle in your belly and suck out some fluid and test it.

I think they end up not even offering the test soon bc of all the problems they have with it.

So even amnio test can give you false positives? I thought they were to be accurate.

Yes. I hear alot of people get the pre screening test done and there numbers come back high. They schedule a amino test and it comes back fine. so all the scare and stress for nothing. kinda why o didnt do it. I do still worry about it tho. ;/ just pray. being so young its rare. I think 18-22 its like 1-1500 or something close to that. And 1 outta every 830 babies are born with it.

I wouldn't risk the amnio personally. Those down syndrome tests can be wrong. I see no point in finding out something like that anyway. If its not a life threatening thing then I think it shouldn't be tested for. I know it'd be nice to prepare for it but really you can't. Its not like you'd love your baby any less. So me personally I'd opt out.

Where does the doctor base your risk of having a find with DS?

I didnt do the blood test. The dr kinda just wants to go straight with the amnio test to find out for sure. It really has caused alot of stress on me. My dr has reffered me to go see a therapists because im always sad and crying. I tried to be strong for the baby because i dont want him/her to feel any pain. I keep researching how rare it is for someone my age to have a down syndrome. And also how inaccurate the tests may be.

I never got the test bc ive heard they can be inaccurate and cause lots of stress for no reason. Im 21. And 32+2 weeks.  (Sometimes I wish I would have got it tho just to know) Usually your chances go up with age. So im sure youll be fine. Did dr tell you numbers?
