Thanks for all advice-although school lunches are stupidly priced,I will be requesting a school menu.I will probably put her on packed lunches near summer time because one of my issues was that I want her on a hot meal during the cold days, ill see how she goes but you guys make some good points.thanx!!
Sweet heart you r not a bad mom for having her eat school lunch if she likes whats on tray that day then let her have it if she doesnt make the lunch the night before no harm no foul
I have always packed lunches because my older daughter has food allergies and even though the school is fully aware and has doctor/allergist notes to that effect, they still made her drink milk once (for which she came home with explosive diarrhea/vomiting)
I have seen the lunches they make at their school, the menu makes it sound so appetizing and healthy, but the food is disgusting. I pack a lunch everyday for my kindergartener and first grader.
You dont have to wake up early to pack a lunch, I pack the night before. They usually take a sandwich and I always pack a fruit/veggy and they get a snack, like a fruit snack or pretzels or something to that effect. And I buy small water bottles and send them with that. I make it the night before and its really easy, and I know that my girls are eating a healthy good quality lunch everyday. They even take salad sometimes, I just pack the lettuce in a tupperware bowel, and then have a small baggy with toppings (raisins/croutons ect) and a small plastic container with some dressing.
My kids have always eaten a school lunch. Where i am the kids have a choice of 3 entrees and they have to chose 1 milk or juice 1 veggie and 1 fruit...they always get extras too and their lunches are broken down into grades so they don't have as many kids. I would say ask the school for a menu if they dont provide one so you can decide on a daily basis.
I personally always preferred to bring packed lunch because the school lunch lines were sooo long that there wasn't enough time left to eat anything. Plus, it let me socialize more instead of having to wait in line. :P just thought I'd add those factors too.
I agree with the first poster. Packed lunche are always best but occasionally it's nice to let them buy school lunch on special occasions or if you just don't have time to pack one.
I make a packed lunch at night and put it in the fridge so its ready to put straight in my lg's bag! I like to know exactly what and how much she's eaten plus the price of school dinners is ridiculous when packed lunch essentials are always in the house x
What I don't like about school lunches is you can't monitor what of the school lunch the kids are eating. Last year my two kids came home starving everyday, well they were only eating 1 or 2 things on the tray(the main dish and dessert, none of the veggies!) So I now pack their lunches and it works out better. That way I know what and how much they are eating. Just my 2 cents.
It really depends on the school and quality of food there. Mine had packed lunches as the school lunches weren't incredibly healthy. Now they have school lunches as the school got a new kitchen and changed the menu. It is all fresh food and amazing choice. I can check what they have eaten on the school website and see the menu for the next week. I can also tell them if there are things I would prefer for them to have or not have and they do their best to accommodate. It has also saved a lot of time and hassle
Tbh, school lunches are good for late mornings or for a nice treat but home lunches are good cause you know exactly what they are eating. It's good to be prepared the night before so your not rushing about in the morning mkong packed lunches. To be honest, school lunches suck, with packed lunch, it what they like and they are more likely to eat it. Hope this helps x
