i ask because my dd was 6.14 at birth ..  was 8.8 at 3 weeks..  now is a month old and weight estimate done last night was 9.5-9.10.....  thats 3lbs in a month..

a baby born at 9lbs wouldnt gain that much would they?  a one month old weighing 12lbs????

He was 9.6 at birth, 9.1 when discharged from the hospital, 9.3 at 5 days old, and now 9.10 at 2 weeks old.

He was 21 3/4'' at birth and now 22.5'' at 2 weeks.

He is 98th percentile for height and 74th percentile for weight.

i called a nurse and she said the weight gain is great.. she said its more concerning when there is none..   she did say that all babies gain differently.. she said some will gain alot to start then taper off, others will gain it slowly overtime....

she didnt really say i birth weight was a factor

I think it honestly does vary baby to baby and maybe has something to do with breast milk vs formula, interesting question tho! My daughter who is 12 now was 6lbs 7oz when she was born and I do remember her picking up weight very quickly and was a chubby baby (she was breast fed).... With my second a boy who is almost 3 he was 6lbs 9oz ( he was formula fed) and he is just a tiny little thing.... he gaines weight very slowly... He is currently 22lbs and in the 5 percentile I think.

amy, what was yours weight when you left hospital as thy generally drop weight to start...  she was down to 6.04lbs then at initial check up she was 6.12 so she was just gaining her birth weight back at that time

she started out in the 5th percentile and now is in the 50th...  her doctor didnt seem concerned with the amount gain and said she is doing quite welll..

she is still a skinny looking baby as she is 54 cm long (21.3 inches)...

it will be interesting to see others experiences here

They say breastfed babies grow faster initially and then taper off whereas formula fed babies tend to put on weight a bit slower in the beginning and then begin to gain faster a bit later on.  But I think it will vary from baby to baby and even depends on whether female or male.

My first child was a boy but I was very young when I had him and he just turned 18 so I can't remember a lot about his weight gain.  I do remember he gained quickly though.  I breastfed and was very proud of that back then.

As for my 5 daughters that I have had over the last 10 years....they have all grown pretty well, but nothing like my son that I just had.  He is 12 weeks old tomorrow, 3 months the day after Thanksgiving, the 25th.  He is HUGE and has grown super rapidly since birth.  He was 7lb 4oz at birth and 19 inches long.  He was a very average size.  At his appt last week, he was already 16lb 8oz.!!!  This was last week, so he was almost 11 weeks at that time.  He is 99 percentile in his weight!!  He is a big boy.  He is my 7th child.  All of my kids have been breastfed during this stage but he has def grown the most rapidly.  So I think it does vary by baby.

I don't know the answer to your question but my son was 9.6 at birth and at his 2 week appt. today is 9.10 so only 4 ounces in 2 weeks. 3 lbs seems like a lot for 1 month but maybe there is something to it since your daughter was born small. Interesting...
