Don't wait to long to ask for it cause once u hit a certain point they can't give it to u know matter how much it hurts and u beg. They will not show u the needle not even if u ask and because the pain of the contractions r so horrifyingly painful u wont even feel them putting the needle in it hurts less than being pinched. for about a week after it feels like u have bruise there but not super painful

I also plan to go natural.  I keep reading people's horror stories with the epidural...safe to say natural sounds better :-)

Demerol, basically iv drugs..that do absolutely nothing..maybe work for a few mins...like novacane on a toothache.  The epidural in my opinion was a life saver..i labored for a while 8hrs from 1am til like 10 it took that long with my, first to dilate from 2 to 10, @ 6/7 cm i got it and took a good nap and i was able to push my kiddo out it took abiut 45mins to get her through, you still can feel a lot of the pain..but its tolerable!!! All pain is tolerable but before i had received it i thought i was going to lose it!

The I.v. Got me super dizzy and no relief. Ive got 5 epiduerals out of six births I love it. 10 minutes later you can talk normal, sleep , I love it. I had no side effects. I never looj at the needle ive been stung by a bee and that hurts alot more. Its a quick sting and thats it the needle does not stay in your back and if your worrying about it wearing off all u have to do is push a button and u get more medicine instantly. It does not allow you to get more then what your aloud.  I liked it because I had more energy to take care of my baby after. Ive also have had natural and it was not for me.

My experience with epi is not good with my 6 yo I got it when having her and it never worked so I didn't get it with my son or daughter and it wasn't so bad I'm currently 19 weeks and had to have a spinal done to get my cerclage placed they went in my back twice and after the procedure I have a headache from hell and my back was in pain turned out I was leaking spinal fluid and had to go back to hospital and they had to do a blood patch which hurt like hell as well so my experience wasn't to good but everyone is diffrent

I've been through it with and without an epidural. It did ache a little and felt bruised around it for a week or so after and I do get more lower back pain than usual. Everyone reacts differently and while there are risks as with any procedure, they are low. The pain increases as labour goes on and it does get bad towards the end. Go in with an open mind and do what ever you feel you need or is best at the time. Most people can endure a lot more than they realise but every birth is different and so is the level and type of pain you have.

Oh no!  You should never feel like you let yourself down.  It isn't a contest to see who can take the most pain.  We can all go natural, if we wanted.  But today, you don't have to if it isn't your wish.

You have a very good attitude.  Just be open-minded is my best piece of advice for anyone.  I see more disappointment in people because they wanted things to go exactly a certain way, and then it doesn't.  So they become disappointed.  Good luck!

my plan is to try my damnedest to go natural, but if I need the epidural I won't feel like I let myself down.

I have had epidurals and not had any pain afterwards.  To be honest, everyone has different experiences.  You will have some on here who have had terrible experiences w/ them and then you will find some who absolutely loved theirs.  If I were you, I would go into it with an open mind.  See how you do w/ the pain and know that there are other pain options, besides the epidural.  If you feel you need the epidural, then that option will be open to you too.
