use prednisone during pregnency

My wife was diagnosed as colitis and the doc suggested using prednisone. She is now 16-week pregnency. We are worried about the effects on Kids. Does anyone have similar experience and give us some suggestion? Thanks a lot.

for moderate to severe illness i think steroid is better for control... dont think too much about the category in which the drug falls.  go by your ob decision. :)

thank you very much. It's OB and GI specialist's decision. We are just concerned since it is category C. Both Azulfidine and asacol are category B. I wonder if you can tell me if those are better than Prednisone. Thanks.

Theoretically Prednisone can cause cleft lip if used in first trimester (Your wife has already crossed that stage). Also steroids are given in preterm labour at 32 weeks to bring about lung maturity of the fetus...i think using it is safe after 16 wks.  hope your dr knows about your wife's pregnancy.
