week old newborn and thrush!?!?!

I was wondering if others have went through this. I am very frustrated. I had my son on the 19th(vaginal delivery). He had got quite a bit of fluid in him so he was very congested and still is. Before leaving the hospital I had noticed white bumps on his tongue and since it was only on his tongue at the time I thought for sure it was from the formula. Couple days after getting home I noticed there were more bumps and again thought from the formula til sunday night, my husband said it was looking like thrush. I checked and sure enough his entire mouth is covered no mistaking it anymore. He sees the doctor today since he couldn't get in yesterday. Has anyone else got home to find there child ended up with thrush? I hadn't actually ever heard of a newborn getting it. I wasn't even warned it  could happen. Also I do not have a yeast infection (immediately what my sister thought). So could someone explain how this could happen?

What Ashelen is talking about is called gentian violet.  My son had as well as a new born and this was the only thing that helped. Be prepared that he may get a infection on his bum for that you will nystatin.

It's super common with newborns because their "good bacteria" aren't balanced yet, and even the smallest yeast on the breast or bottles can cause an overgrowth and thus a yeast infection, even if the amount of yeast on your breast or on the bottles isn't enough to be noticeable.

Don't give a newborn probiotics; your best bet is to talk to your child's pediatrician. I wouldn't wait...thrush can become itchy or even painful and interfere with eating. Since you're doing that...I wouldn't worry.

Both of my newborns had thrush when they were breastfeeding. We were told to use this purple stuff that you paint on the yeast rash in their mouth and it gets rid of it in a day or two..it's amazing stuff, but EVERYTHING gets stained purple, lol. I can't remember the name but ask your ped about "the bright purple stuff" and see if he recommends it. It's basically an antiseptic that they've been using for newborn thrush for generations.

I'm not exactly sure of how it came about or how common it is in infants but I know that if you go to a health food store and buy probiotics for infants, it usually helps with thrush. I've had thrush in my mouth as a teenager and I can tell you it was the WORST!! It's soo painful, so if your baby is very uncomfortable then you know why. I hope it clears up fast! If you are breastfeeding, I think that helps it go away quicker too!
