when does yolk sac go away

I read somewhere that as the pregnancy progresses and the placenta begins functioning that the yolk sac disappears. I know that they placenta begins development around 10 weeks and is usually fully functional by 13-14 weeks. I just can't seem to find a guideline as for when the yolk sac disappears. I had my 12 week scan and it was still visible. Anyone know?

I just had my 8 week and ultrasound and saw the yolk sac. they told me it was kinda rare to see so i was getting alittle worried. I never say one with my first child at all and we did our first ultrasound at 71/2 week with him. i am glad to hear it is not that rare.. thanks for posting

Thanks pmperez, So at some time between now and my 20 week scan it should go away. I guess it stays active until the placenta is fully functioning on it own.
