blood in semen

I just noticed some blood in my semen what are the possiblities of this being cancer versus prostatitis.  And what course of action should I take?  I have a GP appointment in two weeks

Hi,

The blood is not specific for either condition. A cytology of prostatic fluid could be used to look for cancer, but this is not a very good screening test. Hence, you would likely be reviewed as to symptoms of difficulties with voiding and get a rectal examination. From there a risk assessment for cancer would prompt whether or not a biopsy is indicated. The biopsy is the definitive proof of cancer.
