Rare Diseases

I had an emergency c section to deliver my son 7 months ago, and during recovery I hemorrhaged when they put me back under they used succinylcholine, which kept me paralyzed for more then 8 hours.  They say that I have Pseudocholinesterase deficiency, but I'm not a 100% sure if maybe the circumstances may have caused this reaction.  I had been hospitalized for 4 days due to the fact that I was unable to keep anything down, and I am a type 1 diabetic with a clotting disorder.  Just  wondering if maybe there is more to this then what my family and I are being told.  Any help in this matter would be great thank you

Hi,
How are you? What other symptoms are present?  Pseudocholinesterase deficiency is an enzyme abnormality resulting to abnormally slow metabolic breakdown of choline ester drugs such as succinylcholine.  In your case, paralysis unexpectedly persisted for a prolonged period of time following administration of standard doses of succinylcholine. Prolonged vomiting may lead to dehydration, metabolic alkalemia and hematemesis. Due to these conditions, you need to stay in the hospital for monitoring especially with your existing conditions. Take care and do keep us posted.

I had keytones and protein present in the urine but blood sugars stayed normal between 5 and 6 the whole time.  My blood pressure did jump two days before the c section.  They did try to induce labor which was 24 hours before the c section but I did not dilate past 7 cms so that was when they decided to do the c section.  I have had two miscarriages in the past both having to have a D and C done to completely get ride of everything.  I do believe that I was totally out (not sure of the meds they used) when they did the procedures.  When I went in for the c section I know that I hadn't had any food in close to 48 hours and I was on Magnesium Sulfate to prevent seizures.  I'm just trying to figure out if its possible that my son may have the same deficiency or if it was just a freak thing that came up due to everything else that was going on.
