Hi,
How are you? Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that presents with inflammation in certain glands of the body that can lead to dry mouth and dry lips. The exact cause is not known, but according to studies, it could be genetic in nature. Symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome can involve the glands as well as other organs of the body. Extraglandular manifestation includes joint pain or inflammation (arthritis), Raynaud's phenomenon, lung inflammation, vasculitis, lymph-node enlargement, kidney, nerve, and muscle disease. Diagnosis is by testing the eye's ability to wet a small testing paper strip placed under the eyelid also called Schirmer's test and biopsy of salivary-gland tissue. Blood tests such as antinuclear antibodies (ANAs), SS-A and SS-B antibodies, rheumatoid factor, or thyroid antibodies may also be done. Treatment will be directed on the symptoms present. I hope this helps. Take care and regards.
