Rubber tire fumes

My husband purchased four new tires which he has stored in our basement.  We spend a lot of time in the basement with our dogs.  There is a very strong odor which I think comes from the tires.  Is this harmful?

Synthetic rubber is a petroleum product whose synthesis involves heating with sulphur (a process called vulcanization).  You are probably allergic to the petroleum by-products, sulphur, or any of the other compounds in modern rubber manufacturing.  That is why they should stay in your garage!  If you put one in your bed or hang around a lot of tires, then you may become sensitized.  Most people don't hang around tires all day!  If you have an allergy, you should see an allergist and consider changing your job if it's serious enough.  Whether the rubber is made in China or the U.S., you will experience the same thing.  It's sort of stupid that nowadays that it's en vogue to use China as a universal scapegoat... It's like a trend...  "I have allergies... must be because my pillow is made in China (not because I'm allergic to goose down)...",  "my child is a drug user... must be because he wears shoes 'Made in China'!" (not because of bad parenting)...
